VOTING “INTEGRITY”: Speaker Johnson and Trump have a bill of goods to sell you

Speaker Mike Johnson spent Friday visiting Mar-a-Lago doing what Republican leaders always do: make “major announcements” that surely please Donald Trump, the iron-fisted ruler of the Republican party who can ruin careers with one word.

The “major announcement” most certainly was major in its intent, but it has no chance of becoming law prior to the 2024 election. According to Mike Johnson (Video Below)

“Republicans are introducing a bill to require proof of citizenship to vote. It seems like common sense; I’m sure all of us would agree that we only want US citizens to vote in US elections. But there are some Democrats who don’t want to do that.”

Right.

Because who isn’t carrying around proof of their citizenship? Yes – a birth certificate would do it. My proof of naturalization never leaves its folder. And even if someone brings proof of citizenship to register to vote, it only works so long as someone doesn’t claim that it’s forged. Don’t put it past them.

Despite the fact that the announcement won’t become law, it could play an important role when Trump cries that he lost the election due to “election interference” and false, illegal votes.

He has claimed he’d win California if “illegals didn’t vote.”

Republicans will try — and fail — to pass a law ensuring that “illegals,” couldn’t vote, and imagine what would happen in November 2024 if Trump loses. LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!! Trump lost. Or that’s their working theory. Always be prepared.

Of course, there are two major problems with the theory that non-U.S. Citizens vote in elections and — obviously, vote for Democrats.

First, there has been study after study, and the number of non-citizens voting is nearly shockingly low. We can’t get American citizens to vote!!

In 2020, 66.8% of Americans voted, a shockingly high number — but still only 2/3 of Americans and — well, it helped that voting was made easier due to COVID. Republicans are gosh-darned sure they’re not letting that happen again. Too much democracy means too many Democrats! How is a minority supposed to rule?

That is a scary question. We’ll move on.

Second, and this is obvious. The single last place an undocumented immigrant wants to appear is at a government building of some kind, where he or she will have to give their address to prove residency, with security standing around. That is absurd.

Johnson went on:

“We believe that one of their designs, one of their reasons for this open border which everybody asks, all around the country, why would they do this, why would they allow all this chaos, why the violence? Because they want to turn these people into voters.”

Wrong. Democrats want to turn people into immigrants because this is a country of immigrants, and maybe you haven’t noticed, but there is a labor shortage in this country. As I have pointed out before, if all undocumented immigrants disappeared in a week, so would the economies of California, Texas, and Florida, among many others. Huge sectors of our economy are wholly dependent on undocumented workers: Big Ag, Tourism, and Construction.

Immigrants can vote when they become citizens. Many are social conservatives, and Mike Johnson might want to shut up about them automatically voting for Democrats. Maybe they should change some policies?

The Speaker kept going:

“Right now the administration is encouraging illegals to go to their local welfare office to sign up for benefits. Well, guess what? When you go to a welfare office, they also ask you if you would like to register to vote.”

“And so many people, we think, are going to do that.”

Skeptical?

Again, this has no chance of passing. But what it can do is give Donald Trump the perfect launching pad to cry about actually winning the election if only legitimate votes were counted.

It is 2000 Mules 2.0 – getting ahead of themselves this time. Wait, they did that last time, too.

I’ve said this with dread many times. I don’t see how we get through November 2024 to January 2025 without serious violence. And we can only hope that it stops there.
