PRO-WHAT? Trump tries to take (almost) every position on abortion at once

Abortion is one of the biggest issues for voters in 2024, with a majority of Americans supporting access to the procedure in at least some cases. The divide is on exactly when it should be permitted, and when prevented by law.

There are a lot of takes, ranging from a full ban to allowing abortions up until viability, to putting no restrictions in law (leaving it to doctors and patients). Donald Trump is trying to take virtually every possible position at once, and doing an excellent job of hitting all the key points likely to alienate voters.

He already made his supporters angry when he said that taking a position that allowed him to win the election was his priority, and his declaration that the decision should be made by individual states upset both the pro-life and pro-choice contingents.

Now, he’s even contradicting himself on that view, saying that Arizona’s law, just reinforced by the state Supreme Court, goes too far and has to be fixed. He said:

“That’ll be straightened out. As you know it’s all about state’s rights, and that’ll be straightened out. I’m sure that the governor and everybody else are gonna bring it back into reasonable, and that’ll be changed very quickly…Florida’s probably going to change, Arizona’s going to definitely change. Everybody wants that to happen.”

In both Arizona and Florida, voters are expecting to have the opportunity in November to take the question out of the hands of legislators, choosing for themselves with a ballot measure.

The Arizona Governor, Katie Hobbs, is a Democrat, and Trump is, at least, correct that she’s fighting to have the draconian law in question repealed, the Associated Press reports. Hobbs is working in conjunction with the state’s Attorney General, Kris Mayes, also a Democrat, and with legislators on both sides of the aisle who hope to continue being legislators, it’s possible he’ll be right about them doing so quickly, as well.

However, anti-choice extremists, who have heavily supported Trump for putting anti-choice justices on the Supreme Court to overturn the Roe precedent, are not happy about the choice being given to the people and have fought for the right to simply outlaw the life-saving procedure, even rooting for a national ban.

Trump might say the Arizona ban (which prevents all abortions except to save the life of the pregnant person) goes too far, but at the same time, he’s pushing for extremes himself. MeidasTouch reported:

“When pressed by a reporter in Georgia on whether doctors should face punishment for performing abortions, Trump callously deferred to states’ rights, stating, ‘Let that be to the states… the states are handling it.'”

His admission that his position is really about electability is a strong one. It may explain why he’s tried so hard to straddle the fence and take every position possible (except for the one in which it’s left to women and their doctors).

In 2016, he even advocated for there to be “some form of punishment” for women who obtained an abortion, CBS reported.
