LAWSUIT UPDATES: Trump gets new discovery DEADLINE in Jan 6th civil case

While Donald Trump slogs through his criminal trial, griping and complaining the whole way, the rest of the world — including the presidential campaign and his other court cases — keeps moving.

He’s recently received the bad (for Trump) news that he can’t put lawsuits from people harmed by the events of January 6th, 2021, on hold while the Supreme Court decides whether a former president has absolute immunity. On Tuesday, Judge Amit Mehta granted new deadlines.

Trump had asked for extra time to file certain documents, and the other parties did not oppose this. Law & Crime reports:

“Midday Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta granted the unopposed request in a minute order entry, setting deadlines to May 10 for a protective order proposal and May 15 for his immunity defense.”

These cases were brought by Members of Congress and law enforcement who suffered trauma when Trump’s fans attacked the Capitol. They seek to hold him responsible.

Meanwhile, Trump has a long list of other cases that are slowly edging forward.

His January 6th federal case is currently on hold until the Supreme Court hears and rules on his presidential immunity claim. They are scheduled to hear that case on Thursday, and Trump has been complaining that he can’t be there, since he’ll be in criminal court.

The RICO election interference case in Georgia — relying on many of the same facts and events as the Washington DC federal case — is in an appellate court, where a panel will hear arguments and decide whether to remove the District Attorney, Fani Willis after Trump and co-defendants argue that she had an appearance of impropriety by dating a prosecutor.

Trump’s Georgia trial date has not been set, but several of his co-defendants have taken plea deals.

The classified documents case in Florida — where Trump took and kept top secret documents the government says should have been returned, leading to charges under the Espionage Act as well as obstruction charges — is plugging along gradually.

A trial date was set for May 20th, but it’s expected to be rescheduled, with the prosecution asking for July 8, and Trump asking for some undetermined point after the November elections, according to Politico.

Criminal cases aside, Trump is appealing rulings in two separate civil suits brought by E. Jean Carroll. In one, the jury found him liable for defamation; in the other for defamation and sexual assault. There is no schedule yet available for the continuing proceedings.

He’s also appealing a verdict of nearly half a billion dollars for business fraud. He’s been battling over his bond in that case and finally had it accepted this week.

Meanwhile, another lawsuit has been filed by two TruthSocial cofounders who argue that Trump has devalued their stock. They also want permission to dump their shares before the 6-month holding period.

It’s increasingly unlikely that all Trump’s legal problems will be settled before November, and in the calamitous event that he wins the election, he could be dragging all of his criminal and civil baggage into the White House.

All the more reason to never allow that to happen.
