Supporting Ukraine to keep Russia from succeeding in its invasion (and then turning to the next target) is an agenda with bipartisan support, if less so in the House of Representatives than elsewhere. A contingent of Donald Trump’s allies prefer to leave Vladimir Putin free to do as he pleases, and no one, not even Trump himself, is as vocal about it as Marjorie Taylor Greene.
A package to send more aid to Ukraine made it to a vote on Saturday, over opposition by an extremist subset of Republicans who did not want the legislation to even be considered. Greene, for one, argued that helping Ukraine defend itself meant sentencing a generation of Ukrainian men to death, and their wives and children to widowhood and fatherlessness.
Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) immediately called those comments, saying that it makes no sense to suggest that, when Russia invades and bombs and kills civilians, it’s America’s fault for helping Ukrainians defend themselves.
The aid package passed with every Democrat in the House — and 100 Republicans — voting in favor, while 112 Republicans voted against and one voted “present.” Democrats cheered as the votes were totaled, waving Ukrainian flags in support, while Greene can be seen in a clip below, crossing the chambers and waving a thumbs-down sign in opposition.
Afterward, Greene, who has already submitted a resolution to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from his seat, gave a rage-filled press conference, where she shouted vitriol, labeled his decision to bring the vote to the floor “bullsh*t,” and declared her Democratic colleagues unsupportable, saying, “they don’t serve our country,” because they held Ukrainian flags after the vote.
Disingenuously, even as she claims to be against aid to Ukraine because men will die defending their nation, Greene has also insisted that the nation is full of Nazis and doesn’t deserve support.
Being an incredibly unserious person, she also tried to derail aid legislation with ridiculous amendments, one saying that those who supported aiding Ukraine had to agree to go join the Ukrainian army, and one in support of building a space laser. (MTG gave no word as to whether the laser had to be Jewish.)
Representative Jared Moskowitz, who has family members who escaped Nazi Germany, called her out. He says:
“It’s enough of Marjorie’s colleagues sitting there and looking normal while she’s saying the reason why we can’t support Ukraine is because they’re like Germany in the late ’30s and early ’40s. No, they’re not…Moscow Marge is trying to do this Nazi thing which is literally what Putin is saying. It’s the identical argument. And then she thinks she’s funny by filing amendments on Jewish space lasers on the Israel aid package.”
One thing Marjorie never admits, by the way, is that Ukraine isn’t getting pallets of cash. These aid packages consist of ammunition and equipment, meaning that the $60 billion actually gets poured into the American economy, paid to the workers who build these defense materials.
For example, a defense package valued at $300 million included anti-aircraft missiles, anti-armor systems, artillery rounds, and demolition equipment.
Greene claims that the U.S. is helping kill Ukrainian men by giving them the means of defense.
Rep. Adam Smith responds to Marjorie Taylor Greene: The sponsor of this amendment is basically saying if we pass this bill, we are advocating for the deaths of Ukrainians. That is uniquely demented way of looking at this. From a Russian propaganda standpoint, they invade and it’s… pic.twitter.com/EH0F7RKwTD

Greene attacks her colleagues for supporting Ukraine.

It’s a shame that Marjorie Taylor Greene still is taken even the least bit seriously as a legislator at this point when in actuality she acts like nothing more than a Russian asset invading Congress.
