BUMPERGATE: Madison Cawthorn and his latest police problems

Madison Cawthorn seems to get in trouble on the road a lot, and it hasn’t stopped since he was booted out of Congress by voters after a handful of dramas and scandals.

Now, there’s video circulating that appears to be of Cawthorn (police didn’t confirm by name, but gave other corroborating information) sitting in his wheelchair between two vehicles. One is the one he was reportedly driving, and the other is the police car he apparently rear-ended. Oops.

You’ll see the video clip below, but there may be more to the story that hasn’t yet been disclosed.

Police would only confirm that a Florida Highway patrol vehicle was rear-ended by “a 2021 Mercedes, driven by a 28-year-old male of Cape Coral,” according to Newsweek.

That description does fit Cawthorn, and another driver — who says he was tailgating her before he slammed into the back of a police car — says that she pulled over and spoke to an officer, who confirmed the driver’s identity.

One thing that hasn’t been said is whether the car was modified for hand controls since Cawthorn uses a wheelchair as a result of a traffic accident in 2014. If not, it hasn’t stopped him before — back in 2022, a video surfaced of the former Congressman using a stick “torn from a hedge” to manipulate the pedals of an unmodified Mercedes. RadarOnline reported at the time:

“In the clip, he showed himself making a driving utensil torn from a hedge and carved with his ‘trusty old Zero Tolerance knife.’ As Cawthorn pressed on the pedal and used the stick, he seemed to lose partial control of the car due to steering one-handed in what appeared to be a field.”

There’s no word on whether Cawthorn has a court date as yet, but it’s far from his first traffic offense. He collected three traffic charges in the time between September 2021 and January 2022, according to the Citizen-Times.

Those included a ticket for driving 89mph in a 65mph zone and another for driving while license revoked. That was not his first ticket for driving on an invalid license, either — he had another in 2017.

Cawthorn, who represented North Carolina for a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives, moved to Florida after the voters washed their hands of him. He may be done writing legislation, but he seems to be far from finished making headlines.

Below, you can see the clip of Cawthorn after his wreck.
