FULL COURT STRETCH: Trump can’t help but RANT after rough day of jury selection

The estimate is that Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York will last around 6 weeks, but after day 1, the former president has already reportedly been falling asleep in court, and is spreading propaganda outside it, so one can only imagine what lies inshore next.

After court, Trump held a brief press conference in which he echoed claims that Judge Juan Merchan has forbidden him to go to his son Barron’s graduation, though Trump was more cautious in his claim than some of his fans. Unlike some of them, he did not explicitly claim that Merchan has already made that ruling; only indicated that it’s likely he will do so.

Also, unlike his fans, Trump didn’t seem able to come up with his son’s name during the press conference, referring to Barron repeatedly as “my son.” He didn’t manage to call his wife, Melania, by name either, referring to her only as his son’s mother. He said:

“As you know my son is graduating from high school and it looks like the judge will not let me go to the graduation of my son who’s worked very hard…he was looking forward for years to have a graduation with his mother and father there.”

Trump transitioned into further gripes, complaining that it’s also unfair he can’t skip court on Thursday to attend oral arguments at the Supreme Court, where his lawyers will be explaining why they think he should have absolute immunity for any crimes committed during his presidency.

Notably, Judge Merchan indicated that the ruling on Trump getting a day off for his son’s graduation will depend on whether the trial is running on schedule, so extra days off would work against that.

Trump’s middle son, Eric Trump, posted similarly, reposting a false claim from Jack Posobiec that the judge had threatened to arrest Trump for attending his son’s graduation, and adding his own comments. Eric wrote:

“Judge Merchan is truly heartless in not letting a father attend his son’s graduation.”

Trump’s campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a screenshot of a similar claim, suggesting the judge “may not” allow Trump to attend his son’s graduation, with her own caption: “WITCH HUNT.”

Trump added to his complaints on TruthSocial, where he griped about the possibility of missing Barron’s graduation (using his name this time!). He wrote, in part:

“Who will explain for me, to my wonderful son, Barron, who is a GREAT Student at a fantastic School, that his Dad will likely not be allowed to attend his Graduation Ceremony…The Judge, Juan Merchan, is preventing me from proudly attending my son’s Graduation. Seems very unfair, doesn’t it?”

The two sentences in the post that referred to the graduation — with a lot of self-pity and conspiracy theory packed between — show a quick progression from his original position, that the judge will “likely” not allow him a day off to celebrate, to an affirmative claim that Merchan “is preventing” it, though Merchan has not yet ruled.

Below, see some of Trump’s and his allies’ complaints about the possibility that a criminal defendant will have to show up in court.

And this is only day one, folks! Stay tuned for a whole lot more whining as the trial progresses.
