Being the Vice President of the United States is a tough gig, mainly because no one seems to appreciate the Veep all that much, as they’re often seen as nothing more than a human backup plan for the President.

From 1789 until the 1950s the Veep’s primary duty was to preside over the Senate with the sole power to break any tie votes.

But the VP’s role has definitely evolved over the last few decades, and now the VP is often engaged in foreign policy while the POTUS holds things down at home.

We’ve had our share of memorable Vice Presidents, but quite often for the wrong reasons. History’s lens won’t change the way we see Dan “Potatoe” Quayle or Mike “Where’s Mother?” Pence.

Conversely, Joe Biden was one of the best VP’s we’ve ever had, and his choice of Kamala Harris as his running mate showed his dedication to moving the country forward.

Vice President Harris is the kind of asset the Democrats have been waiting for.

However, she’s also unfairly underappreciated and underutilized.

All because, as the brilliant Sophia A. Nelson wrote in October 2022, “it comes down to race and gender no matter how accomplished we are.”

The Democratic Party hasn’t properly harnessed the VP’s power in the right way. Instead of sending her out on the midterm campaign trail to lend her considerable influence to struggling Democratic candidates, she was instead hung out to dry by the likes of Tim Ryan during his unsuccessful Senate bid.

VP Harris has been out there doing a lot of great things no one hears about while the GOP is busy manufacturing distractions with that Chinese balloon and Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Kirsten Allen, Special Assistant to the President and the VP’s Press Secretary, dropped a thread on Twitter outlining some things you didn’t hear about your Vice President but should have.

Your Vice President has been fighting for bodily autonomy for all Americans.

Your Vice President meets with local community leaders to help implement the best of what the Biden administration is doing, from infrastructure to healthcare to record-low unemployment.

Your Vice President is making sure you have clean water to drink, which apparently isn’t important to the Republicans.

Your Vice President is a staunch supporter of unions and workers’ rights.

Your Vice President has been trying to undo the damage the Trump administration did to America’s reputation on the world stage.

Drop a tweet to your Vice President to thank her today.

We don’t deserve her, which is why we need to show our appreciation while we have her.
