Author Chris Whipple appeared on MSNBC‘s Morning Joe with Mika Brzezinski on Saturday to discuss his new book The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Biden’s White House. The Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker told the host that if not for one pro-democracy Trump staff member, the transfer of power between the Trump and Biden administrations may have gone less smoothly.
“A high ranking Trump White House official worked secretly with Joe Biden’s transition team to insure the orderly transfer of power,” Whipple wrote.
It was an assertion that piqued the interest of host Mika Brzezinski. “What was the drama surrounding that?” Brzezinski asked the author.
Whipple then revealed how he came to that conclusion.
“You know, Mika, I spent two years talking to almost all of Joe Biden’s inner circle and it turns out there was more drama behind the scenes of this presidency than anybody knew,” Whipple replied. “And in the transition it was really a remarkable story that hadn’t been told before.”
“It really was closer than anybody thought – the transition of power. It came down to one Deputy Chief of Staff who was in the Trump White House. Who carried out a subrosa operation, keeping the wheels of the transition turning under Trump’s nose – and without his knowledge. And it’s a terrific story,” Whipple asserted.
Less than a week after losing the 2020 presidential election, then-President Trump ordered high ranking government agency members not to cooperate with the transition team of President-Elect Joe Biden.
The Trump appointed head of the General Services Administration (GSA), Emily Murphy, refused to release over $6 million of transition resources belonging to the Biden Administration, and denied the incoming President’s team access to agency officials and information.
Murphy delayed signing documents that would not only release the funds, but allow the transition team access to office space and equipment needed to insure a smooth transfer between administrations.

Though the senior White House official who surreptitiously aided the incoming Democratic administration has not been named, the fact that they had to work under a cloak of secrecy is a reminder that every moment Trump spent in the Oval Office was used to disrupt and dismantle a centuries old system of democratic governance.
Luckily, some people have the patriotism to defy partisan authoritarianism.
