CHANGING SPOTS: Marjorie Taylor Greene tries to shed her image as lunatic conspiracy theorist

Marjorie Taylor Greene is best known for bigoted and insane takes, like musing about Jewish space lasers starting wildfires, and pretending that having to wear a mask during a global pandemic is the same as being a Holocaust victim.

Now she’s trying (again) to back away from some of those views — or at least the consequences of voicing them.

Greene says she “had gotten suck in” to some ideas she stumbled across on the internet, and that all of this was “dealt with quickly.”

She’s trying to explain why she should be restored to the Congressional power of committee assignments, after being removed from them over some of her most bigoted declarations.

She’s already tried this, in 2021 when the vote was held to remove her from committees, standing up and speaking to assure fellow Members that she believes both 9/11 and school shootings really happened, and trying to write off her harassment of a teenaged high school shooting survivor and her other wild theories as a long-past mistake.

Despite that, she has continued to engage in similar bigotry and conspiracy theories, from accusing the LGBTQ community of being “groomers” to insisting the 2020 election was stolen.

Even as she tried to defend herself Sunday morning, Greene would not disavow this ultimate conspiracy theory, the one that resulted in an open and armed attack on U.S. Democracy.

Instead, when asked if she recognizes Joe Biden as the legitimately-elected President of the United States, she repeated the same dodge that she and other election-denying electees insist on, dropping the important qualifier, “legitimately-elected,” as she replied:

“Of course Joe Biden is the president. That’s always a silly question.”

Check out the clip below, in which she tries to excuse her entire political career of spreading lies and hate as just a little past misunderstanding.

She continued, in the interview, to sing the praises of Kevin McCarthy, touting his willingness to support Donald Trump’s Big Lie on January 6th, 2021, as a positive, and arguing that her voters wanted election-denial to prevail.

Less than 48 hours before her appearance on Fox News to dismiss all of her conspiracy promotion as ancient history, Greene retweeted out a 2021 video in which she and Darren Beattie try to spin the January 6th attack as a false flag carried out by government agents.

Such continued propagation of self-interested lies means that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s protestations of a newly reformed outlook are mere marketing cosmetics rather than any deeply-rooted change of heart.
