Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), was viciously attacked in the couple’s San Francisco area home around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. Armed with a hammer, the suspect entered through a sliding glass door and was, according to CNN, looking for Madame Speaker, asking, “Where is Nancy? We are waiting for Nancy.”
The suspect, who CNN says tried to tie Mr. Pelosi up, was identified as David Wayne Depape of Berkley, California, and was in police custody as of Friday afternoon.
Drew Hammill, spokesman for Pelosi’s office, issued this statement on the Speaker’s official website:
“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.
President Joe Biden expressed his support for Madame Speaker and her husband. “The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family. This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected,” the White House said in a statement, Reuters reported.
Vice President Kamala Harris, tweeted words of support.
Doug and I are appalled by the attack on Paul Pelosi, Speaker Pelosi’s husband. The entire Pelosi family is in our hearts and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Rep. Pelosi has been a frequent target of death threats. Heightened by Trump’s one-sided “war” with the longtime Democratic legislature, and constant verbal attacks.
Supporters of the ex-President targeted Pelosi on January 6th. Televised hearings by the Select House Committee revealed that the Secret Service withheld a credible threat against the Speaker of the House for two days, not alerting law enforcement until after the insurrection began.
Though no motive has been released, the break-in at the couple’s Pacific Heights home was “targeted” according to ABC News. “The San Francisco Police Department is working with the FBI and Capitol Police in a joint investigation into the brutal attack.
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” a statement from Pelosi’s spokesperson said.
Mr. Pelosi, who was allegedly undergoing brain surgery at the time of this writing, is expected to recover fully.
San Francisco PD has announced in a press conference that Depape, whose social media was peppered with assorted right wing conspiracy theories, is being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and elder abuse.
