ISN'T THAT SPECIAL: Judge makes decision on special master in Trump classified documents case

Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon just gave the disgraced former president a reprieve, announcing on Saturday her intent to appoint a special master as requested by Trump in his claim that the documents seized in the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago are privileged.

Cannon had previously ordered Trump’s attorneys to clarify their motion seeking a third party to sift through the classified documents retrieved by the FBI in their search of the ex-President’s Palm Beach Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump ranted and raved on his failing social media platform Truth Social:

“In early June, the DOJ and FBI asked my legal representatives to put an extra lock on the door leading to the place where boxes were stored in Mar-a-Lago — We agreed,” Trump wrote in an Aug. 10 post. “Then on Monday, without notification or warning, an army of agents broke into Mar-a-Lago, went to the same storage area, and ripped open the lock that they had asked to be installed. A surprise attack, POLITICS, and all the while our Country is going to HELL!”

Cannon has scheduled a hearing for September in the case, which doesn’t undermine the legitimacy of the DOJ investigation.

Attorney Brad Moss chimed in on the impact Judge Cannon’s decision has on the investigation into Donald Trump:

“It is not an injunction. The filter team has been doing its work for two weeks already. And this order goes out of its way to say this doesn’t mean she will ultimately appoint a Special Master,” Moss explained

The appointing of a Special Master isn’t usual but has occurred when documents have been seized by federal investigators. Cannon asked the Justice Department to produce a “more detailed list” of the documents retrieved from Mar-a-Lago.

Cannon has said her order isn’t final but is aimed at ensuring that the Justice Department is transparent in their investigation of Trump and the use of a “field team” to sift through the documents recovered during the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.

Reaction to Trump’s insistence on a special master to review the classified documents that were recovered from Mar-a-Lago has generated much pushback on social media, as people suggested who they thought might be an appropriate person with the necessary security clearances to review the stolen horde.

We’ll soon see if Judge Aileen Cannon has enough of a sense of irony to follow any of the above suggestions.
