Donald Trump claims his passports were “stolen” by FBI agents executing a search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago estate last week. According to the ex-President, a total of three passports were taken along with the documents seized by the federal agents.
“Wow. In the raid by the FBI or Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else. This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never before seen in our country. Third World,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The FBI hasn’t confirmed Trump’s claims, but if true, it would prevent him from leaving the country.
U.S. citizens are typically issued a blue passport booklet, while red “diplomatic” passports are issued for official government travel. As President, Donald Trump would have been issued both, as well as a black passport exclusive to the sitting president of the United States.
The public initially believed the search was due to violations of the Presidential Records Act until the unsealed warrant and related materials revealed it was partly based on suspicions that the Espionage Act had been violated.
Of the 11 sets of classified materials seized by the FBI, there were four that were marked “top secret,” three “secret,” and three more marked “confidential. Included were documents marked TS/SCI – which stands for Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information – and are meant to be available only to those with the highest level of clearance.
Accusations of passport theft by federal agents aren’t the first unsubstantiated allegation Trump has made. Just Sunday he ranted about privileged documents between the former President and his legal team that were also supposedly taken.
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday:
“Oh great! It has just been learned that the FBI, in its now famous raid of Mar-a-Lago, took boxes of privileged ‘attorney-client’ material, and also ‘executive’ privileged material, which they knowingly should not have taken.”
Ironically, Trump referred to the “stolen” passports as an “assault on a political opponent,” but in fact, he has yet to formally announce his bid for the 2024 presidential race.
