The brief affair that Elon Musk had with the wife of long-time friend — and Google co-founder — Sergey Brin seems to have ended not one, but two relationships. The Discovery of the affair led Brin to file for divorce from his wife of four years, Nicole Shanahan, in early January.
The tech billionaire cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.
It’s reported the affair between Shanahan and the Tesla CEO happened at Art Basel in Miami, Florida, a multi-day event that brings artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts together for multiple events.
According to The Wall Street Journal, several people with knowledge of the incident alleged Musk dropped to one knee and begged his former friend to forgive him.
While acknowledging the apology, Brin is not eager to mend fences –ordering his financial advisers to sell all of his personal financial investments in Musk-owned companies.
Though currently the world’s richest man – with a net worth of $240B – it was the world’s eighth richest individual, Sergey Brin, who came to Musk’s rescue.
During the financial collapse of 2008, Musk’s company Tesla was struggling, and Brin ponied up $500,000 to help the company increase production. Seven years later, Elon Musk gifted his billionaire pal with one of Tesla’s first all-electric SUVs.
The past few months have been a series of embarrassing media reports and court battles for the world’s richest social media troll.
With Musk under several SEC investigations, and facing multiple lawsuits, the first half of 2022 has been a series of missteps, embarrassments, and court battles for the Tesla CEO.
Musk is facing accusations of insider trading, deliberate market manipulation, and racial discrimination allegations at his California Tesla plant, to name a few.
His most recent battle involved a lawsuit from Twitter, in an attempt to force the second largest shareholder to complete the $44B deal both parties agreed to in April 2022.
Musk’s affair with Nicole Shanahan reportedly came after his breakup with then-girlfriend Grimes. Mother of two of Musk’s nine living children – Grimes and Musk had a second child through a surrogate just weeks after he had twins with one of his company’s employees, 36-year-old Neuralink executive Shivon Zillis. Zillis became the third woman to have children with the billionaire.
Shanahan told news outlet Puck, “I hope for Sergey and I to move forward with dignity, honesty, and harmony for the sake of our child.”
The couple shares a three-year-old, and are going through a contentious divorce. Although she signed a prenup, Brin’s soon-to-be ex-wife is asking for a $1 billion settlement. Arguing that it’s only a “fraction,” of her husband’s reported $95 billion fortune.
Dignity and honesty apparently aren’t high on Musk’s list of character traits however – sleeping with one of your best friend’s spouses is proof of that. It’s doubtful that Musk will be “crashing” on Brin’s sofa again anytime soon – guess he’ll have to settle for crashing stocks.
