As the nation awaits the start of this month’s televised hearings outlining the findings so far of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th insurrection, Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), the Vice-Chair of the committee, gave a preview of what the country will hear when the first public revelations of the information they’ve gathered take place.
Rep. Cheney appeared on CBS Sunday Morning today and told host Robert Costa that she has no doubts that the insurrection was part of a “well-organized” conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
“It is extremely broad. It’s extremely well-organized. It’s really chilling,” Cheney told Costa, adding that she was extremely disturbed by “how broad this multi-pronged effort was.”
The Wyoming Congresswoman attributed at least part of the blame for this well-oiled conspiracy to the fact that her own Republican Party — the party in which she and her family had previously been anointed royalty — had been transformed over the past 6 years into a cult of personality built upon the worship of Donald Trump as its organizing principle.
Host Robert Costa asked Cheney why Trump continues to hold top Republican politicians like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in his thrall despite Trump’s now obvious attempts to foment a coup.
“What keeps Kevin McCarthy close to Trump? Fear? Or something else?” Costa wondered.
Cheney’s reply was both devastating and indicative of the giant rift in the GOP between the establishment Republicans of yore and the MAGA wing of right-wing extremists who have largely taken over the party.
“I think some of it is fear,” Cheney responded. “I think it’s also craven political calculation. I think that he has decided that, you know, the most important thing to him is to attempt to be Speaker of the House. And therefore he is embracing those in our party who are anti-Semitic; he is embracing those in our party who are white nationalists; he is lying about what happened on January 6; and he’s turned his back on the Constitution.”
While Cheney has apparently lost any respect that she may have previously had for Minority Leader McCarthy, the public is anxious to hear more details of the evidence that the Congresswoman describes as “chilling.”
We will apparently have to wait until the televised hearings to get the complete narrative of this “well-organized” conspiracy as detailed by the House Select Committee.
In the meantime, however, you can watch a clip of Congresswoman Liz Cheney’s appearance on CBS Sunday Morning in the video below.
