I initially endorsed Nikki Fried for governor of Florida when she first announced her candidacy in early 2021. Her leadership experience and accomplishments as Florida Agriculture Commissioner support her progressive platform, which includes being an LGBTQ and marijuana reform advocate, which are admirable qualities. She is also a strong proponent for gun safety and protects the 2nd amendment right of those who are qualified to own weapons.
A few days ago, I learned that Nikki Fried filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration regarding the gun rights of marijuana users. My first reaction because of what I was thinking about medical marijuana is that it only helps people with mental health. As someone who has PTSD from combat in Afghanistan, I jumped the gun and withdrew my endorsement because I believed people with mental health issues shouldn’t own a weapon.
After having a dialogue with my followers and learning more about the benefits of marijuana, I realized that not only does it help with mental health, but it helps with physical pain. If these Americans are mentally fit to use a firearm for self-defense, they have that 2nd amendment Constitutional right to own a gun.
I learned that this lawsuit was by no means meant to be any sort of punishment for Biden and his administration. Instead, it is being used as a reminder to protect the 2nd amendment right of marijuana users.
Among other issues on which I support Nikki Fried is her ability not to be afraid to fight for the people.
We need leaders who will represent all Floridians, not just their own base, as Ron DeSantis is guilty of. It is also good to know that if she can hold Democratic leadership accountable, then there is no question that she will hold Republicans responsible.
Nikki Fried also wants Florida as a state to be fairer for all Floridians, regardless of race, gender, or background.
I think that her leadership style will bring something bold and fresh to the people of Florida.
