Rep. Andrew Clyde faces House censure after calling the insurrection a “normal tourist visit”

There is no better example of Republicans’ revisionist history regarding the insurrection of January 6th than the contrast in Congressman Andrew Clyde’s (R-GA) current laughable words describing the raging mob’s storming of the Capitol as a “normal tourist visit” and the photos showing him cowering in panic as that mob began banging on the House Chamber’s doors, eventually forcing him to rush to try to fortify the barricades to prevent their entry and the potential abduction of the legislators to the gallows that they handily built on the Capitol grounds.

The brazen hypocrisy in trying to characterize an event that left five people dead and many others injured and afflicted with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as insignificant when one knows from one’s own experience that it is anything but easily dismissable is one of the reasons that Rep. Clyde has been excoriated on social media today and now faces a censure resolution from his House colleagues.

Yes, the resistance was out in force today to counter the corrosive narrative that the Republican lawmaker was insincerely trying to peddle…and they brought receipts and an ironic sense of humor.

While Republicans like Congressman Clyde may make themselves look like deceptive buffoons, it would be unwise to underestimate the danger that their vile propaganda of lies poses to the fate of democracy in our nation.

With right-wing media outlets amplifying GOP lies about January 6th, those people stuck in the conservative news bubble may just ignore the fact that those preposterous claims are easily refuted by video footage of the insurrection and buy into the myth-building that Republicans like Rep. Clyde and his ilk are attempting to shove down their throats.

While mockery may help diffuse the anger one feels when witnessing the kind of contortions the GOP is engaging in with reality, the danger that our nation faces from these people who are truly the enemies of democracy won’t disappear until these fellow travelers of domestic terrorists are expelled from Congress as the 14th Amendment allows.

It’s time to stop mocking legislators like Congressman Clyde and start hounding them out of office.

While House Democrats have yet to try to expel any of the worst members of the opposition party, they at least have begun to circulate a formal censure resolution condemning Rep. Clyde for his delusional claims as well as one for Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) who actively helped organize the “Stop the Steal” rally that devolved into the violent insurrection and called its participants “peaceful Patriots.”

Those are resolutions that the House simply can’t pass quickly enough, but it is a shame to single out only Reps. Clyde and Gosar when Matt Gaetz, Devin Nunes, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Jim Jordan, and numerous other equally deplorable Republican members of Congress continue to serve beside them.

Let’s rid the House of all of its seditious members at once and rebuild trust, respect, and truth in Congress.
