A heated encounter between AOC and MTG leads to security concerns in Congress

Every once in a while you’ll see a newspaper report of a fistfight that has broken out in the legislature of some foreign nation and think to yourself that, as bad and divided as things are in the United States Congress, at least they haven’t yet resorted to throwing punches at each other.

Yet an encounter yesterday between the Trumpy QAnon Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and progressive firebrand Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) leads one to believe that we may not be as far off from the types of fisticuffs that have erupted on the floors of legislatures in places like South Korea and Taiwan.

According to an account in The Washington Post, the incident between the two lawmakers both popularly known by their three-letter initials began when AOC exited the House chamber late yesterday afternoon.

Rep. Greene exited the chamber shortly behind the New York representative and shouted “Hey, Alexandria” a couple of times to get the Democratic lawmaker’s attention.

When Ocasio-Cortez did not respond and continued on her way, MTG rushed after her and began shouting and harassing the legislator who is her political polar opposite.

In her shouts at Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, the fanatical right-wing Georgia representative taunted AOC, asking her why she was an Antifa and Black Lives Matter supporter, accusing her of supporting terrorist organizations.

How far our nation has fallen when it becomes acceptable to consider those who oppose fascism and the police killings of unarmed black citizens as terrorists while throwing one’s full support behind the real terrorists who overran our Capitol and tried to overthrow our democracy!

MTG also badgered AOC for declining to publicly debate Greene and defend what the Georgia congresswoman called her “radical socialist” ideology.

“You don’t care about the American people,” Greene screamed at the New York legislator. “Why do you support terrorists and Antifa?”

As someone who grew up in New York City, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez knows that one does not acknowledge lunatics who come up to you on the street and start screaming insane babblings at you, so she deftly ignored her colleague from Georgia, continued to walk forward, and turned around only once to throw her hands up in the air out of exasperation.

Add your name to demand Congress raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour!

Reporters on the scene weren’t close enough to hear if AOC responded to Greene’s verbal assault with words of her own, but did manage to contact the New York representative’s office to get this statement of concern about Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s physical security in the face of the same kind of targeted harassment that Greene displayed towards the gun regulation activists and school shooting survivors from Florida’s Parkland High School before she was elected to Congress.

“Representative Greene tried to begin an argument with Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and when Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tried to walk away, Congresswoman Greene began screaming and called Rep. Ocasio-Cortez a terrorist sympathizer,” AOC spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said in a statement.

“We hope leadership and the Sergeant at Arms will take real steps to make Congress a safe, civil place for all Members and staff — especially as many offices are discussing reopening. One Member has already been forced to relocate her office due to Congresswoman Greene’s attacks,” Hitt continued, referencing the fued between Greene and Congresswoman Marie Newman (D-IL) over the Illinois lawmaker’s display of a transgender flag to support her own non-gender-conforming daughter outside of her office formerly across the hall from the office belongign to Greene, who promptly posted an anti-transgender sign outside her door in retliation.

For her part, MTG provocatively postured for the press, further taunting her progressive colleague as afraid to debate her in a war of ideologies that would be like an intellectual battleship fighting a dinghy.

“She’s a chicken, she doesn’t want to debate the Green New Deal,” Rep. Greene told the onlookers nearby the encounter. “These members are cowards. They need to defend their legislation to the people. That’s pathetic.”
