After Capitol Police uncovered intelligence about a “possible plot” by a militia group to breach the U.S. Capitol tomorrow — on the day that delusional right-wing conspiracy theorists believe Donald Trump will be inaugurated for a second term according to their crowd-sourced insanity — House Democrats have decided to proceed with an abundance of caution and rejigger their legislative schedule to counteract any potential interference by another attempt at an armed invasion of the hallowed workplace.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has reportedly accelerated the vote for a sweeping police reform bill — the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 — bringing it to the floor for passage this evening rather than tomorrow as originally scheduled.

Meanwhile, federal investigators are combing through details of hotel reservations, incoming flights, and other transportation and lodging information in the Washington DC area to assess the signs that violent militias are potentially returning to the national capital to make another attempt to overthrow the Biden administration and interfere with the legitimate duties of Congress.

Given that right-wing social media sites have been awash in posts about a March 4th return to the Capitol since shortly after the events of January 6th, it’s uncertain why the Capitol Police are only now taking the potential threat seriously.

In the twisted imaginations of the QAnon and other conspiracy theorists on the right, March 4th is supposedly the date that Trump will reclaim the presidency because it was the original inauguration date in the Constitution before 1933 when it was moved forward to January due to the fact that modern transportation infrastructure no longer requires a long journey to Washington DC by horse or rail as it did in the early days of the republic.

Some right-wingers conveniently reject the legitimacy of any Constitutional amendments passed after the Civil War, a particularly appealing opinion among white supremacists for whom the amendments guaranteeing the end of slavery and the extension of suffrage to women some regard with disdain.

While Capitol Police did not name a specific militia group that their intelligence indicated may try to threaten the Capitol, members of The Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, and the Three Percenters have all been implicated in the initial violence on January 6th.

Hopefully, the advance knowledge of the potential attacks being planned will prevent any militias from actually carrying out their dastardly agenda, but, as we have seen countless times before when apocalyptic deadlines come and go and the world continues turning, conspiracy theorists are seldom dissuaded by the failure of their predictions to come true.

Instead, they usually find some lame excuse for why their prognostications didn’t pan out and choose another date in the future as the real moment when their fever dreams will come true.

Unfortunately, some of their gullible followers will continue to believe them, despite all the evidence to the contrary and their previous disappointments.

That is why a Justice Department crackdown on right-wing extremists is so urgently necessary and so long overdue.
