Republicans fall all over themselves trying to whip up excuses for Ted Cruz’s Cancun scandal

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has inflicted one of the worst political self-wounds in recent memory by getting caught fleeing to Cancun as a historic wave of winter storms causes mass power outages in Texas. People are struggling to survive, the death toll is rising, and the characteristically weasely Cruz thought he could sneak away to a tropical paradise.

Unfortunately for the failed presidential candidate, he was caught on camera at the airport and aboard his flight and the story quickly exploded in the news. Now, Cruz is flying back to Texas and has wheeled out the absurd and frankly unbelievable excuse that he traveled to Mexico because he needed to accompany his family on the flight to their vacation spot. He wants us all to believe that he always intended to return to his home state today to deal with the crisis.

As ludicrous as Cruz’s excuse is, some of those trotted out by Republicans on Twitter today were even worse. The usual hacks, blowhards, liars, psychopaths, and morons that constitute the digital right-wing raced to defend the Texas senator’s behavior, bringing all of their not inconsiderable powers for bad faith arguments to bear.

Add your name to call on prosecutors to ARREST DONALD TRUMP for his crimes!

One of the more common arguments offered up by these professional creeps was that Cruz did nothing wrong because there’s nothing that he, a sitting U.S. Senator, could do to help his state right now. They argued that since he’s a federal official and not a state or city level one he is powerless to help suffering Texans.

While it’s true that he lacks any emergency powers that might alleviate the problems citizens are facing on the ground right now, he is a sitting U.S. senator!  Cruz is incredibly well-connected and if he wanted to he could be spending every waking hour calling in favors, organizing relief, and tapping his expansive political network to save lives. Instead, he decided he jet off to a beach to sip piña coladas and work on his tan.

Fellow Texan and former Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke has already done more for his state during this catastrophe than Cruz by working with volunteers to make over 150,000 wellness calls to senior citizens.  Clearly, Texas would be far better off with O’Rourke representing them in the Senate.

Take a brief moment to consider what these same right-wingers would be saying right now if a Democratic politician had been caught taking a pleasure trip while his or her constituents died?  Republicans would be calling not only for resignation but prosecution or even blood. The reason they’re scrambling to paint Cruz’s actions in a favorable light is that many of them hope that he’ll run for president in 2024.

Fortunately for the United States, this debacle will hang around the senator’s neck for the rest of his sniveling, slithering, sneaking life like an albatross and make it far more difficult for him to ever reach higher office. If the good people of Texas would simply vote him out of office he could spend the rest of his life with his nasty feet in the sand — and it wouldn’t cost a single life.
