The world will have to go another day without the prospect of a gloating Donald Trump publicly bloviating about his second impeachment acquittal.
The reporters were assembled to witness the first on-camera appearance from the dishonored former president after his acquittal by the 43 Republican senators who refused to convict Trump despite the ample evidence of his guilt provided by the Democratic House impeachment managers.
However, as CNN‘s Kaitlan Collins reported on Twitter, the tempestuous ex-commander-in-chief abruptly decided to cancel the press conference at the very last minute this morning.
Though his staff initially believed Trump would make a statement in front of cameras following his second impeachment trial, that no longer appears to be the plan. Reporters stationed in Palm Beach have been told a statement from the former president is no longer expected.

To date, the only response that Trump has given to the news of his latest evasion of justice was in a heavily Orwellian statement that he issued immediately after the results of the Senate vote were announced on Saturday.
“It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree. I always have, and always will, be a champion for the unwavering rule of law, the heroes of law enforcement, and the right of Americans to peacefully and honorably debate the issues of the day without malice and without hate,” Trump’s statement read.
“I always have, and always will, be a champion for the unwavering rule of law, the heroes of law enforcement, and the right of Americans to peacefully and honorably debate the issues of the day without malice and without hate. This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country. No president has ever gone through anything like it, and it continues because our opponents cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago,” the statement continued.
“Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it! We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future,” the statement concluded.
Trump’s projection of his own crimes upon his political opposition is likely what reporters would have witnessed if he hadn’t backed out of this morning’s press conference.
While no reason was given for the false alarm/fire drill that reporters endured this morning, it’s likely that the prospect of being forced to take hostile questions from journalists was among the reasons for the sudden change of plans.
The world will simply have to wait a bit longer before hearing Trump’s voice proclaiming his vindication for the umpteenth time.
