Do you get the sense that Republican senators aren’t taking this impeachment trial as seriously as they should?

After all, during the frighteningly effective opening video montage that intercut Trump’s January 6th speech at the Stop The Steal rally with scenes of the devastating violence in the Capitol Building, a group of GOP senators — including Rand Paul (R-KY), Rick Scott (R-FL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Marco Rubio (R-FL) — went out of their way to make public displays of ignoring the clear evidence of Trump’s incitement of his unruly mob that was unfolding on the screens before them.

They were doodling, looking at papers, anything but acknowledging the enormity of the crime that was clearly committed.

Other Republican senators displayed their disdain for the entire impeachment process of the deposed president — on charges that he helped put their lives in actual danger, no less — in their comments to the press after the first days’ session.

Count North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer — one of the less media-hungry senators in the GOP caucus — among this last group.

This Republican politician seems to miss the entire point of the impeachment and seems to insinuate that the only reason that the Democrats are putting Donald Trump on trial is that they fear him running for a second term in four years.

Add your name to demand the Senate CONVICT DONALD TRUMP for inciting an insurrection against the United States!

The coprophagic grin on Senator Cramer’s face does not demonstrate that he has any concern that the events of January 6th represent a devastating attack on American democracy, despite fitting the textbook example of violent sedition.

He treats the entire impeachment process as a giant political game rather than as a method of accountability for a former president gone unprecedentedly rogue.

With jurors like this, including a number of senators like Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) whose own rhetoric in the days before the insurrection was equally responsible for the violence, the likelihood of a trial devoid of partisan rancor is minimal.

It looks like the criminal courts will have to be the venue where Trump is held accountable.
