“We were waist-deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.”

— Pete Seeger

After last week’s unsuccessful coup attempt by a group of violent domestic terrorists supporting a seditious president, it is fascinating to see how Donald Trump’s media supporters are dealing with the aftermath and continuing to do everything they can to stay in line with his unabandoned claims of victimization by an election that he still claims to have been stolen from him.

Much like the cowardly Republican defenders of the exiting president in Congress and in statehouses around the country, many of the ardent talking heads who have been parroting Trump’s lies about a stolen election and inciting their viewers to ever more radicalized opinions are now scrambling to find a way to excuse their battle-scarred leader and shield him from the dire consequences of his deadly and traitorous inciting rhetoric.

There is no outlet where this phenomenon is more obvious than on Fox News where ratings have been tanking as the “news” network’s most extreme viewers abandon it for the even more partisan and fact-free right-wing climes of Newsmax and OAN.

Caught between management’s financial imperatives to maintain profits — if they want to keep their jobs — and the overwhelming public sentiment that accountability for the violently fatal terrorist action must be meted to those responsible for inciting it, Fox News is now mimicking the belated calls for unity that hypocritical GOP leaders have responded with to Democratic calls to remove Trump from office immediately by any legal method available.

Brian Kilmeade provided the perfect example this morning on Fox & Friends when the morning show host called for the appeasement of Trump’s radical fringe army of violent adherents by dropping any and all calls for the chaos-inciting president to be impeached in his few remaining days in office.

Rather than calling for the use of police and military force to counter the threats of violence from the rag-tag militias in Trump’s militarized base as they did on a regular basis when violence broke out during this past summer’s BLM protests — often instigated by the same right-wing forces that took part in the Capitol insurrection — Kilmeade suggests that if the president’s supporters are angry enough to threaten violence at all 50 of the nation’s state capitols on Inauguration Day then we should simply capitulate and let Trump go unpenalized for his seditious actions.

Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister in the 1930s who notoriously coddled Adolph Hitler in the run-up to World War II, would be so proud that he’s finally found someone who appreciates his logic.

You can watch a clip of Fox  & Friends’ Brian Kilmeade arguing against holding Trump accountable for his vile scheme to retain power in the excerpt attached below.
