Whether the top Republican congressional leaders are simply humoring Donald Trump in his delusional efforts to declare the 2020 presidential election invalid because of evidence-free claims of voter fraud or whether they are openly colluding with the rejected president to plan a coup of unprecedented proportions shouldn’t have to be a question that we are asking ourselves right now.
Yet here we are, just a week before the electoral college is set to meet to finalize the election of Joe Biden, the man who won more than seven million more votes than Trump, and senior GOP officials are still acting like the results of the election haven’t been obviously settled for weeks already.
The latest manifestation of the GOP’s potentially seditious refusal to acknowledge the inevitability of a Biden presidency came today at a meeting of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inauguration Ceremonies (JCCIC) where Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) joined House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to block a motion affirming that the committee is actually preparing for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and not readying itself for a second Trump inaugural.
The move to block Hoyer’s motion effectively killed the seemingly pro-forma declaration that the Maryland congressman had introduced which read in its entirety:
“I move that the committee notify the American people that we are preparing for the inauguration of the 46th President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden Jr., and his Vice President, Kamala Harris, in coordination with the Biden Presidential Inaugural Committee and public health experts to ensure the health and safety of the American people as we observe this transition of power.”
Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) called out his Republican colleagues on the committee for their partisan obstructionism of his innocuous resolution in a statement he released after the committee meeting ended.
“The extent to which Republicans are refusing to accept the outcome of the election and recognize Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next President and Vice President is astounding,” Hoyer said following the JCCIC meeting. “Their continued deference to President Trump’s post-election temper tantrums threatens our democracy and undermines faith in our system of elections. Today is the safe-harbor deadline, and states have now certified their results, confirming that Joe Biden will be the forty-sixth President of the United States and Kamala Harris will be the first woman and first Black and South Asian American to serve as Vice President. It is imperative that JCCIC proceed with plans for their inauguration and coordinate with the Biden Presidential Inaugural Committee. Instead, Republicans are refusing even to allow JCCIC to say that President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be inaugurated on January 20, even when there is no serious dispute over that fact.”
At some point, perhaps today, the safe-harbor deadline for states to certify the validity of their election results —which every state except Wisconsin has done — Republicans will have to stop their sniveling attempts to protect Trump’s crystalline-fragile ego from the reality of his loss or be accused of truly engaging in a seditious exercise designed to topple the peaceful transition of our democratic system of government.
Enough already. If GOP leaders can’t recognize the results of an election declared free and fair by the administration’s own election officials, then they should resign immediately and crawl back into their partisan rat-holes.
They obviously are putting their own power-hungry ambitions over the principles of democracy and have no claims to legitimacy in representing any of their state’s citizens with their obstructionist hi-jinks.
