Trump provides a delusional excuse for his latest legal setback

At what point do Donald Trump’s delusions of a victory prevented only by massive election fraud — for which he and his attorneys have been unable to provide even an iota of hard evidence — become not just a sign of his malign intent to subvert democracy and his tenuous hold on basic reality but such a threat to our system of government that he must be stopped by either the invocation of the 25th amendment or the most rapid impeachment hearings in American history?

Many people would suggest that we already reached that point days ago and Trump himself has reinforced that opinion in his social media posts, as this latest gem demonstrates.

Unless Trump is referring to some deal he has in the works with the Michigan Republican state legislators whom he is flying to Washington DC at his request in an attempt to prevent the state’s legitimately determined Biden victory from being certified, his claims that his campaign’s lawsuit was dropped because he won the election ring of panicked desperation and mental instability.

The notice of voluntary dismissal filed by the Trump campaign in their lawsuit in the United States District Court in the Western District of Michigan Southern Division shows that the reason given for dropping the suit was that it was no longer necessary since the “Wayne County board of county canvassers met and declined to certify the results of the presidential election.”

Unfortunately, that filing seems to have been drafted in the brief period between the initial refusal by the Republican members of the board to certify the ballots and the second unanimous vote approving the results of the vote count after the obvious racist motives for disenfranchising Detroit’s heavily African American electorate were widely publicized and forced the GOP loyalists to have second thoughts about subverting democracy.

The incompetence of Trump’s legal team can only be compared with the soon-to-be ex-president’s own inability to manage a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump’s attorneys likely only care about billable hours and continued access to the highest levels of power, otherwise, they would have never taken on these cases that have been filed on such flimsy or non-existent evidence.

Indeed, a number of law firms initially representing the Trump campaign, likely concerned about their reputations going forward and seeing no chance of victory, have resigned their roles in these baseless election fraud cases.

Trump’s specious excuse for the withdrawal of a lawsuit contesting election results that had already been rendered a fait accompli by last night’s final certification is as pathetic as it is laughable.

The narcissist whose own ego prevents him from admitting defeat is only adding to his public humiliation by refusing to accept his vanquished fate in a graceful and dignified manner.

Then again, graceful and dignified were never a part of Donald Trump’s behavioral repertoire and likely never will be.

It just goes to show you that if you live by the sword of bullying and derision, your eventual fate will be equally ugly.

And no one is more deserving of public humiliation after the last four years of chaos and malevolence than Donald J. Trump.
