Trump threatens to sue “everyone all over the place” in furious rant about Mueller probe

Donald Trump and his Attorney General William Barr have found themselves at the heart of a judicial maelstrom in recent days, with outrage building over Barr’s decision to interfere in the Roger Stone case to procure a lighter sentence at the president’s orders. The four prosecutors involved with the case withdrew from it in protest and calls have been spreading for Barr to immediately resign for his cynical dismantling of the Department of Justice’s nonpartisan nature.

This morning, Trump slammed the prosecutors on Twitter, calling them “Mueller prosecutors” before once again erroneously claiming that the special counsels’ investigation was “illegally set up.” He unleashed a barrage of Fox News fever dream conspiracy buzz phrases, lambasting the “discredited Fake Dossier” and ranting about the FISA Court.

As usual, he avoided going into any real details or providing evidence for his claims, instead relying on the kneejerk response to these rhetorical totems that the right-wing media sphere has indoctrinated in his followers. Facts don’t matter to these people, all that matters is that one dutifully engage in tribal signaling towards nonsensical fabricated narratives which, coincidentally, are all deeply flattering of Trump.

Add your name to tell the ABA: Disbar William Barr for abusing the Justice Department to abet Trump’s corruption!

“Everything having to do with this fraudulent investigation is badly tainted,” Trump went on. He then implied that Mueller visited him to request that he once again be made FBI Director. This move is a favorite of Trump’s. Often when confronted by some political enemy, real or imagined, he will claim that they begged him for a job and when he declined they grew bitter and decided to pursue a vendetta against him. Of course, there is absolutely no truth to the implication that Mueller’s investigation was driven by such petty motivations and as usual it’s safest to just presume that our pathologically mendacious president is lying again.

“If I wasn’t President, Id’ be suing all over the place BUT MAYBE I STILL WILL. WITCH HUNT!” Trump concluded his tweetstorm.

There are two points that should be made here. First, Trump’s being president is not the kind of thing that would cause him to reject the idea of retaliatory lawsuits if he believed they were in his best interests. This man has no respect for his office and has degraded and disgraced it since day one. He has no sense of solemnity towards the Oval Office and would not hesitate to engage in petty litigation out of concern that it would be unbecoming of the president. Every single thing he does and says is unbecoming of the president.

Secondly and more pointedly, Trump doesn’t really want to pursue legal action in these matters because he would lose badly. Lawsuits would once again dredge up all the evidence, indictments, and convictions yielded by the Mueller probe, all of which Trump has worked around the clock to obfuscate and distort for his credulous followers. Relitigating these issues would be an absolute media disaster for Trump. By simply threatening lawsuits, he’s able to project the image of victimization and self-righteous anger that is so crucial to stoking the rage of his aggrieved base.
