What other U.S. president has ever managed to turn the annual tradition of making a Christmas call to the American troops defending our nation into an exercise in fishing for praise for his superiority over his predecessors?

That’s exactly what Trump did today as he spoke to five military units deployed at bases around the world on a video conference call from a decidedly more luxurious locale at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

While the president somehow managed to get through the obligatory Merry Christmas wishes for the service members, saying that he hoped that “every member of our military will feel the overwhelming gratitude of our nation,” it didn’t take him long to steer the conversation to his favorite topic — his own imagined greatness — and use the opportunity to denigrate the record of the prior president whom he loves to attack at any available opportunity, Barack Obama.

Vox’s Aaron Rupar posted video excerpts of the call from C-Span on his Twitter feed that included a laughable statement from the president about his work ethic — while he spends his days golfing and tweeting — as well as an implicit criticism of Obama’s failure to provide newer aircraft to the Air Force.

The obvious insecurity of the incompetent successor to one of the most intelligent and erudite presidents that the nation has seen is well-deserved but highly incompatible with his own narcissistic self-regard.

Thus, Trump finds it necessary to politicize even the most typically non-partisan of presidential traditions, rambling to reporters both before and after the call with the troops about the unfairness of his impeachment by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives as he presents himself as oblivious to the gravity of the illegal behavior that he has committed, despite doing everything in his power to obstruct his executive branch staff from testifying to the truth of what actually occurred.

After all, what better way to celebrate the birth of Christ than to break a few commandments?
