The impeachment hearings are proving to be not only an illuminating look at how singularly corrupt our president is but also a perfect distillation of the differences between the two parties.
Democrats are proceeding methodically and by the book, treating their responsibility to ascertain the truth for the American people with all the seriousness it deserves. They’re determined to ensure that the president is held accountable for any violations of the Constitution.
Republicans, on the other hand, have no interest in the truth and are dedicating themselves solely to running interference for Trump, obfuscating his impeachable behavior, and derailing the hearings with petty procedural stunts and faux outrage. It’s clear that they don’t care if the president abused his executive powers in an attempt to coerce Ukraine into harming a political rival, they care only about maintaining GOP control of the White House.
Of all the Republican hacks taking part in these impeachment hearings, Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL) is by far one of the worst bad-faith actors. Gaetz has long distinguished himself as one of Trump’s most fawning toadies and these proceedings are offering him a chance to demonstrate his loyalty.
During a vote in the House Judiciary Committee to momentarily adjourn Gaetz threw one of his trademark, spittle-flecked fits. When asked how he’d like to vote, he lashed out.
“No, this is so they can have a press conference before Mr. Castor gets the chance to the rebuttal. Nobody asked for this break,” said Gaetz, referring to Steve Castor, the Republicans’ counsel and a man who has already made it clear that he is a pro-Trump shill.
As he so often does, Gaetz was feigning self-righteous fury over a non-issue. A short adjournment is such an incredibly silly thing to get angry about that one must presume he was just looking for his latest excuse to rant.
Since the Republicans have no credible way to defend Trump and nothing that they can legitimately complain about due to how meticulously the Democrats have handled this process, they’ve decided to complain about every little thing that pops into their heads.
Gaetz is nothing more than a rank opportunist and he represents a complete perversion of all the ideals that public servants are supposed to represent. One would say he should be ashamed of his behavior, but it’s long been apparent that he is pathologically incapable of shame.
