After Donald Trump backed out of Democrats’ invitation to participate in the House Judiciary Committee’s Wednesday impeachment hearings along with his attorneys— despite having endlessly complained that they were being prevented from presenting their defense by partisan Democrats — the Trump administration has had to find new talking points to distract the public from the substance of the testimony that has been so highly incriminating for the politically scheming president and his gang of complicit flunkies.
Cue Senior White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway!
The longest-lasting of Trump’s presidential advisors who is not a member of his own family, Conway was ready to deliver a fresh method of turning media attention away from the damaging details of Trump administration misbehavior and towards the president’s counter-accusations against the Democratic leaders who have been trying their best to hold him and his corrupt team accountable for their crimes.
Rather than address the question of why White House Counsel Pat Cipollone would refuse the opportunity to rebut the testimony of the career diplomats and other federal employees who have disclosed the truth behind the Ukraine extortion scandal, Conway instead absurdly questioned why the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee wasn’t appearing as a witness in the next phase of the hearings, employing Trump’s life-long pattern of following the reverse maxim that “the best defense is a good offense.”
“Is Adam Schiff going to testify? Because he is a fact witness. That would be great. I’ll tell you what: If Adam Schiff testifies, I’ll show up on behalf of the White House,” Conway aggressively declared to reporters this afternoon.
Hopefully, Congressman Schiff and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler — who is presiding over this round of hearings in the impeachment inquiry — will call Conway’s bluff and force her to testify under oath as to what she has witnessed in Oval Office discussions about the withholding of military aid to the Ukranian government until their president, Volodymyr Zelensky, agreed to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family…or plead the Fifth Amendment.
That result, unfortunately, is unlikely given that Schiff has already responded negatively to the same suggestion that he be called to testify about Trump’s accusations that the whistleblower — who initially raised concerns about the president’s illegal introduction of partisan politics into a quid pro quo deal for already appropriated military aid funding — contacted Schiff’s committee before filing a complaint.
According to an article on The Hill:
“Schiff said on CNN’s State of the Union last week that it would show ‘a fundamental lack of seriousness, a willingness to try to turn this into a circus, like the president would like’ if the Senate were to call him as a witness.”
As the ringmaster of Trump’s defensive circus while the president is off on his European jaunt to attend NATO meetings that he will surely do everything in his power to undermine, Conway attacked Democrats for wasting time by scheduling constitutional legal experts as witnesses in the Judiciary Committee hearings to explain to the public the legitimacy of an impeachment process that Trump has characterized as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.”
“What is the process? What will they be discussing? They have constitutional law experts coming in. How is that beneficial?” Conway questioned the Democrats’ strategy. “I don’t even understand what they’re doing.”
While it might be smarter for Conway to not admit a lack of comprehension of the strategy of Trump’s chief antagonists, the creator of the term “alternative facts” had no problem suggesting that Democrats stick to focusing on legislative issues such as drug pricing and infrastructure, despite the fact that the nearly 400 bills already passed by House Democrats that address those issues — and so much more — have been languishing on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk while he has petulantly refused to even consider them.
Apparently “alternative facts” are still the Trump administration’s only recourse to prevent the public from accessing the actual truth about their misgovernment. Conway’s continued dissemination of the administration’s lies that Trump’s impeachment “is an unconstitutional, illegitimate process,” as she described it today, proves that when the facts are squarely against them, Trump and his cadre of enablers will simply attack the messengers and the process to try to coverup the evidence of their criminality.
