Donald Trump is a man infamous for his lack of empathy, but every so often he’ll do or say something that renders that fact in such stark detail that it can’t be ignored. His comments at a private fundraiser yesterday are such an occurrence.
According to Time magazine’s Vera Bergengruen, the president brought up the shooting of House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) at the event. Scalise, an embarrassingly devoted supporter of Donald Trump, was shot by a crazed gunman while playing baseball in 2017. Regardless of your thoughts on Scalise’s politics, the terrifying incident obviously deserves your condemnation and Scalise your personal, if not political, support. Not surprisingly, Trump tried to make the disturbing affair about himself.
The president said that he met with Scalise’s wife after he was shot and said she “cried her eyes out when I met her at the hospital that fateful day.”

He then went on to say that “not many wives would react that way to tragedy, I know mine wouldn’t.” While it’s possible he was simply trying to make a joke in poor taste, it’s impossible to rule out the fact that he was being completely serious given First Lady Melania’s publicly demonstrated distaste for him. It’s entirely conceivable that she would not cry if Donald was injured and, in fact, she might celebrate it on some level.
This woman is married to one of the most odious men in the entire world. He’s an avowed sexual predator, a deeply unempathetic man, a lazy father, and an incompetent leader. There is quite literally nothing to love about Donald J. Trump. Melania has found power and international recognition through her marriage to him but little else. One can easily imagine her counting down the days till he is no longer president and she can divorce him without any political considerations in play.
All that said, she doesn’t deserve your sympathy. She chose to marry the Devil, she doesn’t get to complain about the heat.
