When House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) passed away unexpectedly this week, Donald Trump at least had the decency to have one of his more literate aides compose a tweet of condolence to the Congressman’s family to send out on his behalf.
On the day that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s older brother passed away at the age of 90 from complications of a stroke, however, the president chose to send invective rather than condolences to the grieving Democratic leader.
Trump’s purposeful slight was caused by the fact that he was livid over Speaker Pelosi’s previously unannounced visit to Jordan with a bipartisan congressional delegation to discuss the president’s blundering moves in Syria with Jordanian King Abdullah II and senior Jordanian officials.

Joining Pelosi on the trip were Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA), a member of the Armed Services Committee; House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY); Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), the head of the House Intelligence Committee; and the lone GOP member of the delegation, Mac Thornberry (R-TX), another Armed Services Committee member.
“With the deepening crisis in Syria after Turkey’s incursion, our delegation has engaged in vital discussions about the impact to regional stability, increased flow of refugees, and the dangerous opening that has been provided to ISIS, Iran and Russia,” Pelosi said after meeting with the Jordanian leaders on Saturday night.
According to The Washington Post, Pelosi is not confident about the five-day cease-fire negotiated by Vice President Mike Pence and Turkish President Recep Erdoğan last week which has been only partially successful in halting the Turkish invasion of Kurdish-held Syrian territory.
Rather than simply dismissing The Washington Post account of the congressional visit led by the House Speaker as one more instance of “Fake News,” Trump went on the attack on Twitter, typically blaming the long-standing hostilities in the region on his predecessor rather than accepting the responsibility for the consequences of his own near-universally criticised decisions.
Pelosi is now leading a delegation of 9, including Corrupt Adam Schiff, to Jordan to check out Syria. She should find out why Obama drew The Red Line In the Sand, & then did NOTHING, losing Syria & all respect. I did something, 58 missiles. One million died under Obama’s mistake!

If Trump assigns blame to Obama for the million deaths that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad caused with his civil war that included internationally-prohibited chemical weapons attacks against his own citizens, then he will logically have to accept the blame for any massacres of the Kurds by the Turks that take place as the outcome of his betrayal of our formerly close allies in the Middle East conflicts of the past 18 years.
Unlike President Trump, Obama had read the Constitution and knew that the power to take foreign military action properly remains with Congress and is not something to be taken lightly or forged ahead with unilaterally without consulting allies or gaining consensus on the correct path of action with the members of Congress.
Trump may criticize Pelosi for her surprise visit to Jordan and Obama for not bombing Syria after it did cross the red line of chemical weapons use, but Obama respected the abhorrence of military action against Syria and the widening of the Middle East wars by the majority in Congress and managed to find a diplomatic solution that saw Syria give up most of its stash of chemical weapons peacefully.
Donald Trump is the last person who should speak of America losing respect from the international community. His behavior on the world stage has been the biggest source of embarrassment for the nation among our international partners since his inauguration.
If the crowning glory of his accomplishments to date is the flight of 58 missiles into Syria while blaming Obama for a million deaths, one must wonder what he thought happened when those 58 missiles hit their targets. Now he has the blood of the Kurds upon his hands, a stain that will not wash out as easily as the drivel that flows out of his deceptive and vindictive mouth.
