Donald Trump is continuing his attempts to deflect the attention away from his crimes — as most recently exemplified by the Ukraine political extortion scandal — and onto his accusers.
Besides his daily fusillade of tweets proclaiming a vast conspiracy between Democrats and an imaginary “Deep State” to thwart his presidency, Trump has enlisted everyone in his administration to make the rounds of cable news outlets and spread his false counter-narrative that it is his opponents and not his own corrupt actions that present a clear and present danger to America.
In keeping with his spurious claims that the U.S. economy will collapse once his impeachment begins, the president enlisted his chief trade advisor Peter Navarro to pollute the airwaves of the Fox Business news channel with a partisan attack on the Democrats in the House of Representatives who have now officially launched the investigation to compile the articles of impeachment against Trump — remarkably without causing any significant dip in the stock market and belying the president’s self-serving predictions.
Ignoring every constitutional imperative motivating the House Democrats and the chamber’s status as a co-equal branch of government, Navarro declared that the investigation of the president’s clear criminal behavior in attempting to once again solicit illegal foreign assistance in his campaign for re-election amounted to an “attempted coup d’etat.”
Surely hoping to impress his boss by echoing Trump’s vastly exaggerated and wholely invented similes comparing his opponents to the most frightening forces his brain can muster, Navarro likened the president’s Democratic investigators to the Soviet secret police under the Stalinist regime and declared them to be “more dangerous” than China, Russia, or Iran.
In actuality, when it comes to Donald Trump’s personal fate, Navarro has a point with that last comparison, since the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry is likely to bring the president down much more quickly than any of those foreign governments, at least one of which helped elect him in the first place and likely has no desire to see their “useful idiot” fall from power, given how helpful he’s been in destroying America’s national unity and weakening our international influence.
With a majority of Americans now approving of the Democratic impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump for the first time since the news of the Ukraine scandal has become public, it’s easy to see why Trump has placed such an emphasis on attempting to deflect and distract from the facts of his criminality.
Unfortunately for the president, the only people likely to buy any of the bogus claims he and his minions are making are those already-converted Trump supporters to whom actual facts are irrelevant.
Anyone else with an ounce of intelligence and functioning senses can plainly see and hear the truth of Trump’s “high crimes and misdemeanors” and will dismiss the propaganda that the president and his slavish administration is peddling while waiting for the House investigations to play out to their logical conclusion — the vote to forward his impeachment trial to the Republican-controlled Senate for a trial.
While conventional wisdom says that Senate Republicans will never defect from this president in the numbers necessary to remove him from office, the actual testimony that results from the House impeachment inquiries may make that assumption less certain than Trump and the prognosticators believe.
