A top DHS official just resigned in wake of Trump complaints about not enough media attention

The Trump White House’s constantly revolving doors are spinning once again as a top Department of Homeland Security official exits amid tensions with the White House and the endless internal backstabbing and power struggles that have gripped the Trump administration since the transition period.

Andrew Meehan, a top aide to acting Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan, has resigned in frustration as the President slowly but surely purges the government of anyone and everyone who doesn’t see eye-to-eye with him.

CBP earned the president’s ire last week when they supposedly “botched” the rollout of the appalling decision to reverse the Flores Settlement, the court decision which put limits on how long the government could detain immigrants and their families.

The problem, of course, is not one of morality but of ratings. The president is mad that the changes didn’t get enough attention from the media and blames the CBP’s decision to make the announcement from the CPB’s office in Washington D.C. instead of the White House.

“Flores is a huge deal to the president,…This is the underpinning of the whole fight. This just seems to me this is a very important rollout and they … undersold it at the Reagan Center” said an official to Axios. “[McAleenan] could have been on all the TVs if he wanted to. But not everybody’s taking live coverage from the Reagan Center at the last minute. At some point something has got to go right at DHS with their messaging and rollouts.”

It’s supremely telling that the President is up in arms because he can’t watch his orders being carried out on live television — sorry, TiVo (“one of the greatest inventions in history”) — and likely because he doesn’t feel that the utter cruelty of his order is being properly communicated to his bloodthirsty followers.

Trump is reportedly very suspicious of McAleenan, a holdover from the Obama administration, and has “no intention” of giving him the permanent position. Instead, he will likely give the job to racist goblin Ken Cuccinelli, who made headlines a week ago when he rewrote the poem on the Statue of Liberty to justify Trump’s racist policies.

McAleenan, a career official, is likely not long for the Trump administration either. While DHS officials were certainly never saints or even particularly empathetic people, the idea of the entire staff being driven out and replaced with Trump’s band of rabid white nationalists is terrifying to consider.

The next president is going to have to fire so many people.
