Trump just got caught in a massive financial scandal that would sink any other president

At this point, it would come as a genuine surprise to discover that one of Trump’s businesses or past dealings didn’t involve some form of criminality or corruption. The man’s entire life has been a journey in skirting the law, enriching himself and ruining countless lives in the process. It seems like just about every day another rock is turned over and some past misdeed from this president comes scuttling out. Today is such a day.

HuffPost reports that it now appears that Trump lied about his Scotland golf courses in his financial disclosure statements, inflating their worth by as much as $165 million which, if true, would be an extremely serious federal crime.

Last year, Trump inflated the worth of two of his golf resorts in Scotland by a total of $100 million in his disclosures. During the same stretch of time, he also submitted statements in the UK which showed that in reality, the two locations held a combined debt that outweighed their assets by 47.9 million British pounds which at the time translated to roughly $64.8 million.

Additionally, the public financial disclosure Trump was obligated to submit to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics insists that the two locations, Aberdeenshire and Trump Turnberry, generated $23.8 million in income. The parallel filing made to the U.K. Companies House office shows that, in fact, they lost the equivalent of $6.3 million.

On top of that, the statement made in America left out the $199.5 million total in loans Trump injected into the locations from his own personal assets as well as his trust.

HuffPost explains that filing these kinds of misstatements on official forms could carry a penalty of up to a year in jail and that signing off on such forms and endorsing their validity could land as serious a penalty as five years in prison.

These developments are, unfortunately, exactly the kind of thing we have come to expect from this pathologically mendacious man. His shadowy empire is built out of ill-gotten gains and habitual tax evasion. He has viewed himself as above the law his entire life, so it’s hardly surprising that he has brought the same toxic, warped outlook to the Oval Office.

This man is a crook plain and simple and the grim reality is that with sycophantic Republicans in control of the Senate, impeachment is effectively a nonstarter. The only way to rid the White House of this stain is to show up en masse in 2020 and vote him out. Perhaps then he will finally find himself facing the legal consequences he has shirked his entire life.
