Trump just made a tweet about Elijah Cummings so ugly that even his former staff are calling him out

Trump’s racist reelection campaign continues to get uglier by the day. The president has made it abundantly clear through his behavior that he intends to smear and belittle prominent people of color as a way of inciting and mobilizing his white nationalist supporters. He denies there is any kind of bigotry at work but one need only look at those he chooses to go after to see the despicable pattern.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has quickly emerged as Trump’s favorite target. The president has been smearing the respected lawmaker all week, with his attacks expanding to insult the entire city of Baltimore, which is part of Cummings’s congressional. The president called the predominantly Black city “rat and rodent infested” and has not walked back his vile words despite the widespread public outcry.  The dog whistles could not be any louder.

Now, Trump has taken to Twitter to obliquely celebrate the fact that Cummings’s house in Baltimore has been burglarized. The crime occurred this past Saturday, so it’s odd that the president is just mentioning it now. Either he didn’t find out until today, or he had to work himself into a lather to pen a tweet this boorish.

“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!” Trump wrote with apparent glee. It comes across as Trump reveling in Cummings’s misfortune, rolling around in it like a pig in mud.

There is no way to interpret the tweet as anything but the president crudely rubbing the incident in Cummings’s face. It also gives his fans a new talking point. They can cite the crime as proof that Trump’s indefensible comments about Baltimore were justified, thickening the smokescreen he has been conjuring to obfuscate his blatant racism. There is absolutely no excuse for a tweet such as this.

Twitter users were appalled at the president’s tweet and even Trump’s former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley — who has been all too happy to ignore the president’s worst behavior in the past — felt the need to call it “unnecessary.”

One would be wise not to mistake this as the sudden growth of a conscience on her part. More likely, she decided that this tweet was just a step too far and is distancing herself from it to keep her future political ambitions intact. Unfortunately for her, Haley is forever stained by her serving in the most inept, corrupt administration in history. Don’t fall for her ploys.
