The Mayor of Cincinnati just gave a brilliant response to Trump’s attack on him at last night’s rally

Last night, Trump held one of the white nationalist carnivals that he refers to as rallies in Cincinnati. The MAGA minions showed up in force, sporting those red caps that will surely pop up in history books with the same connotations as the hoods of the Ku Klux Klan. Trump’s rhetoric was as scatterbrained and inflammatory as usual and the mindless mob ate up every word.

At one point a protestor was led out of the venue. While waiting for the commotion to die down, Trump leaned away from his microphone and asked someone nearby if Cincinnati has a Democratic mayor, perhaps not realizing his voice was still being projected to the crowd. Once assured that the mayor was part of the opposition party, Trump returned to the mic. “You must have a Democrat mayor. Do you have a Democrat mayor?” he asked, inciting his supporters to boo and roar.

Now, Mayor John Cranley  — the man Trump aspersed by implying that his leadership was directly responsible for the unruly rally — has responded with class and dignity.

“Ohio has been run by Republicans for decades and has been declining for decades,” Cranley said to The Cincinnati Enquirer.  He went on to defend not only his reputation but those of his predecessors.

“Since Cincinnati has been run by strong Democratic mayors – Luken, Mallory and me – we have bucked Ohio’s decline and are growing again because we embrace our diversity and have made meaningful public/private investments in education, infrastructure and jobs,” said Cranley.

“Joseph [my son] and I laughed this morning watching Trump on YouTube have to ask if the mayor was a Democrat before attacking me,” Cranley said, mocking the president’s demonstrated ignorance.

The mayor responded perfectly. He didn’t get worked up over the president’s attacks but treated them as unseriously as they deserve. Trump is a bad joke and should be treated as such. Meanwhile, serious public servants like Cranely can continue to do the important work of building and lifting up their communities.
