Robert Mueller testified before the House Judiciary Committee today and utterly demolished one of Trump’s favorite talking points. The president has repeatedly and falsely claimed that the Special Counsel’s report exonerated him of obstruction of justice.
Today, Mueller made it clear that the report did not exonerate the president and that even if he had wanted to bring charges against Trump for any of the ten occasions on which he may have obstructed justice, the Special Counsel could not have because existing protocol prohibits charging a sitting president.
Crucially though, Mueller revealed that it’s possible to charge Trump after he leaves office, opening the door to the possibility that our criminal president might finally face justice if he’s voted out in 2020. That knowledge alone made this hearing completely worthwhile.

The Republicans who questioned Mueller gave a shameful performance, blatantly shilling for President Trump, proving far more interested in protecting the GOP than getting to the truth of Mueller’s investigation. It was another stark reminder of just how rotten to its core the Republican Party has become. For them, power is all that matters.
Rising Democratic star Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — who has repeatedly found herself on the receiving end of racist attacks from Trump in recent weeks — took to Twitter to weigh in on the Special Counsel’s testimony, displaying her usual intellect and insight.
AOC pointed out a self-apparent American truth that the Republicans have chosen to reject: all Americans should be treated the same in the eyes of the law. The rich and powerful should be just as accountable for their wrongdoing as anyone else.
“That includes the president,” Ocasio-Cortez went on, making it abundantly clear where she stands on the question of criminal proceedings against Donald J. Trump.
She reminded her followers that the president broke the law and that the only way to protect this country’s legal foundation is to impeach him. She could not be more right. The very future of this country hinges on removing this cruel, criminal monster from the Oval Office.
The rule of law means *everyone* should be treated the same in the eyes of the law.
That means the rich & powerful should be held accountable for crimes as anyone else.
That includes the President.
He broke the law. And to maintain American rule of law, he must be impeached. https://t.co/9YZga1JEB4
