President Trump and his Republican cronies have spent the entire past week relentlessly and viciously smearing Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) as an un-American anti-Semite in an appalling attempt to deflect from his own racist attacks on four Democratic Representatives of color.

But their contrived and unfair accusations were exposed on Saturday morning as nothing but a convenient hood for their bigotry against our nation’s first refugee congresswoman.
In an obvious dog-whistle to his racist fans and to fascists around the world, President Trump retweeted British white supremacist Katie Hopkins in a transparently insincere attempt to both disavow the appalling “send her back” chant that his fans coined during his most recent rally and underhandedly praise them for doing so.
As you can see, I did nothing to lead people on, nor was I particularly happy with their chant. Just a very big and patriotic crowd. They love the USA! https://t.co/6IVKEffNnq

Katie Hopkins would find herself right at home in the Ku Klux Klan. She infamously blamed the Jews slaughtered in the anti-Semitic Tree of Life massacre in Pittsburgh for their own murders and has called for a “final solution” for Muslims in the United Kingdom, which is a clear reference to the Holocaust.
Katie Hopkins, who the President quote tweets here, has said Jews were to blame for the Pittsburgh massacre because they supported immigration and called for a “final solution” for Muslims in the UK.

It’s a very educational lesson in how the right-wing is weaponizing anti-Semitism and exploiting the memory of those lost in the Holocaust in order to attack their political enemies and to turn them against each other.
They succeeded in the aftermath of Ilhan Omar’s remarks, which admittedly could have been phrased more judiciously but whose intent was both appropriate and correct. Pro-Israel “moderate” Democrats and their lapdog media cheerleaders like Jake Tapper played right along with the right-wing’s bad faith smear campaign.
By joining in the pile-on being orchestrated by rabid racists and known white nationalists, Democrats simultaneously enabled their Islamophobic attacks, alienated the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, and proved Omar’s criticisms correct.
Now that Trump has decided to take both mask and hood off, it’s clear that they got played — and this is the result. The president of the United States is actively promoting white supremacist rhetoric and its propagators, and the Democratic Party must put its differences aside in order to fight this pernicious evil.
