Trump just publicly accused a Muslim Democrat of loving terrorists

President Trump thrilled his racist fans over the weekend by targeting four Congresswomen — all of them people of color — by telling them to “go back” to their own countries, despite the fact that three of them were born and raised in the United States.  This morning, he doubled down on his rhetoric against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, unleashing a frothing Twitter rant in which he accused them of being racist, as blatant an example of projection as one can imagine.

While much of the commentary around his rhetoric has correctly identified it as incredibly racist, most of the GOP refuses to condemn it as such, so afraid are they of inciting Trump’s ire. This failing demonstrates how fundamentally morally bankrupt the Republican Party has become.

Speaking to reporters today, Trump went on a stunningly bigoted rant and smeared Rep. Ilhan Omar as a fan of Al Qaeda, presumably because of her Muslim faith. Omar has quickly become one of the president’s favorite target because she offers the opportunity for him to indulge his racist, nativist, and Islamaphobic tendencies all at once. He also accused Omar of hating Jewish people, a particularly ironic claim coming from the president whose tenure has prompted a massive jump in hate crimes.

Eventually, the president was confronted about his tweets, specifically the fact that white nationalists are finding “common cause” with him over his rhetoric. Rather than reject their support outright, Trump said that it “doesn’t concern him” because “many people” agree with him before going on to give a ridiculous defense of his remarks, saying that he wasn’t implying that the Congresswoman should leave America forever. It should go without saying, but just because many people agree with the president’s racist ideas doesn’t mean they’re not racist.

Anyone who “agrees” with Trump’s tweets is a bigot and his talk today shows he’s in no hurry to reject that label. As the election grows closer, one can only imagine what racist new lows he’ll sink to in an effort to pander
