President Trump began his Sunday morning by telling the four most prominent women of the House Progressive Caucus to “go back to their countries” in an astonishing and repulsive show of racism.

Exploiting an unusually public but relatively minor feud between the House Democratic leadership and their progressive freshwomen, Trump insinuated that the women — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Rep, Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) — hadn’t been born here and told them to go fix “their own corrupt and inept governments” before trying to fix ours.
The majority of the women were all born in the United States, while Omar fled her native homeland of Somalia and became a citizen in 2000. Ironically, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born in the Bronx, which is where Donald Trump himself was born.
But it wouldn’t matter if they all were immigrants who became citizens yesterday; everyone in the United States is either descended from immigrants or descended from the survivors of the genocide that those immigrants committed against the indigenous population.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter and fired back at the president with a powerful riposte, calling him out for his many crimes, the evils that he empowers, and for attempting to impose his twisted and perverted vision of a white American ethnostate on a diverse nation.
You are angry because you don’t believe in an America where I represent New York 14, where the good people of Minnesota elected @IlhanMN, where @RashidaTlaib fights for Michigan families, where @AyannaPressley champions little girls in Boston.

You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.
You won’t accept a nation that sees healthcare as a right or education as a #1 priority, especially where we’re the ones fighting for it.
Yet here we are.

But you know what’s the rub of it all, Mr. President?
On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either.
You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe.

Ocasio-Cortez really hit the mark with her final tweet, identifying the real reason behind the president’s ire.
Donald Trump has spent his whole life treating women as objects, to be seen and used and thrown aside when he loses interest in them. For him to see brave and determined women of color raising hell on Capitol Hill and leading the charge against his administration is an existential threat to his entire worldview, and that’s why he tends to take his hood off when lashing out at AOC and her crew.
Our nation is a nation of immigrants, and the election of women like Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, and Pressley is a celebration of the values that truly made America great in the first place. We need to throw all our support behind these women and elect more like them to break the power of white supremacists like Donald Trump and his Republican cronies.
