Trump just offered an absurd excuse for Paul Ryan’s trashing of him in a new book

Judging from his comments today, President Trump is deeply displeased with the way that former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan characterized him in the new book American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump from Politico’s chief political correspondent Tim Alberta.

While Trump and Ryan were reluctant allies during the time their tenures overlapped, Alberta writes that Ryan saw his retirement as an “escape hatch” from the mercurial president. Ryan believed he had to try to forge a relationship with Trump to “help him get his mind right,” efforts which were clearly in vain.

“Because I’m telling you, he didn’t know anything about government,” Ryan said according to Alberta. The Speaker added that he wanted to “scold” the president constantly. In reality, he proved to be utterly spineless in his showdowns with Trump and rolled over as he went ahead with some of the vilest elements of his agenda.

During some face time with reporters today, Trump rambled and ranted about a battery of subjects. He made sure to take time to attack Ryan, saying that in fact it was the former House Speaker who didn’t understand government.

“Frankly, he was a baby, he didn’t know what he was doing,” the president said. He also whined that Ryan wouldn’t give out subpoenas, presumably to go after Trump’s enemies on shaky legal grounds. As he worked himself up into a tizzy, he alighted on an absurd explanation for Ryan’s comments.

“For him to be going out and opening his mouth is pretty incredible. But maybe he gets paid,” Trump said, implying that the former Speaker had been bribed to bash him. The pathetic explanation can, of course, be rejected out of hand. While Ryan’s less-than-stellar integrity might breed ambivalence when one asks the question of whether or not he’d accept a bribe, Politico is a reputable organization that would never sink to such underhanded methods.

Once again, we see President Trump unable to wrap his head around reasonable criticism and resorting to ridiculous conspiracy theories and personal attack.
