President Trump’s highly touted 4th of July militarism extravaganza did not end up living up to the hype, but that still hasn’t kept his critics for hammering him on the outrageous expense and abuse of public funds for his own selfish and unethical ends.

The breaking point for former White House ethics chief Walter Schaub was the use of the president’s personal Twitter account to send out a video about his boring and trite speech that was effectively a partisan re-election campaign ad, paid for by the public and the final insult to the great injury that is Trump’s hijacking of our nation’s birth to celebrate an intensely corrupt and authoritarian racist.
There you have it. A taxpayer- funded campaign ad. Your tax dollars coopted for the benefit of a man whose idea of public service is the public serving him. Tens of millions effectively given to the Trump Campaign. This is what it was all about. This and revenue for his hotel. https://t.co/C4bHC0wHHN

Schaub, a holdover from the Obama administration, resigned early in Trump’s presidency in protest of the president’s outrageous violations of the most basic standards of ethical behavior and has since become of the president’s loudest critics from his new position at the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center.

The sight of Abrams tanks and a B2 bomber flyover during yesterday’s 4th of July event left many with a sour taste in their mouths, distraught at the similarity to events held by nationalist strongmen in undemocratic nations around the world — though it’s not like we don’t sing the National Anthem and have fighter jet flyovers at every major sporting event.

But it’s the exploitation of public resources to paint the president as the avatar of patriotism and to fuel his re-election campaign that really crosses the line and what we really should be up in arms about, because that’s not what we pay our taxes for and the vast majority of us do not support the man who cages children and makes their mothers drink from toilets.
