President Trump’s already bizarre relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took a turn for the bewildering on Friday evening, when the President announced on Twitter that he was leaving Japan for South Korea, and that maybe, if he wanted to, he would like to see Chairman Kim, just to say hi, completely casual, nothing weird.
After some very important meetings, including my meeting with President Xi of China, I will be leaving Japan for South Korea (with President Moon). While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!

HELLO(?)!
The tone of the message reeks of desperation and exposes the President’s burning need for approval from his fellow world leaders, especially the more dictatorial, strongman ones whose iron grip on power he envies so deeply.
The reaction from the world was one of immediate derision, confusion, and mockery as social media users made fun of the president’s needy outreach to the North Korean leader.
While we’re all for diplomacy and peaceful negotiation, this seems to be a bit much.
