Is it at all surprising that the man who hosted Celebrity Apprentice — an attempt to shore up the flagging ratings of the original format of his failing reality show — would thoroughly debase the office of the President of the United States by trying the same trick to salvage his presidency once it became so obviously in danger of cancellation?

This notion would explain the twitter feud President Trump has engaged in with noted songstress and actor Bette Midler.
The antipathy between the two dates back to way before Trump’s political ambitions were even a spark in the bankruptcy-rich real estate developer’s twisted mind as this vicious tweet from 2012 demonstrates.
While @BetteMidler is an extremely unattractive woman, I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct.

The feud reheated during the last month after Midler inadvertently shared a made-up quote attributed to the president in one of her Twitter posts.
The Hollywood icon apologized and issued a tweeted retraction when she realized that the quote was not genuine while pointing out how believable the attribution truly was in her own defense.

I apologize; this quote turns out to be a fake from way back in ‘15-16. Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true! Fact Check: Did Trump say in '98 Republicans are dumb? https://t.co/NY9s6V49el via @rgj

A state visit to Great Britain wasn’t enough to distract the president from lashing out at Midler for her tweets, and Trump set aside any official duties of international diplomacy to respond with a display of vengeance that failed the test of proper presidential decorum as much as anything he’s ever done.
Washed up psycho @BetteMidler was forced to apologize for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make “your great president” look really bad. She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. A sick scammer!

The deranged and inappropriate assault against the entertainer shocked the nation, leading former Vice President Joe Biden to remark at an Iowa rally today:
“On the D-Day ceremonies — the D-Day ceremonies — it was astounding to me that he was tweeting attacks on everybody, from the mayor of London to Bette Midler. He found time to go after Bette Midler, for God’s sake!”
“No president has done something like that, for God’s sake,” Biden said. “I mean, it’s bizarre, and it’s damaging.”
Midler promptly changed her Twitter bio to read “Washed up Psycho” and began trolling the president with a stream of hilarious tweets that were anything but flattering towards Trump after thanking her fans for their support.
I want to thank everyone who came to my defense last night during my personal Battle of the Bulge with he who must not be named. Your wit and good nature really lifted my spirits; as a newly washed up psycho, I am very grateful for your thoughts and prayers.

She also used the media attention the feud attracted to help promote causes dear to her heart, before moving on to more traditional ownership models.
Dear @realDonaldTrump, So sorry I missed your call! I was hoping to finish our conversation about removing single use plastics from your life. Oceans are now full of plastic and that’s no fun for your yacht to drive through! Please give my best to Melania. xoBette #PlasticFree

She enlisted the images of two of President Trump’s frequent female targets to join her in a Witches of Eastwick parody photo that included a quote from the lyrics of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins “I Put a Spell on You” in another tweet.
Sisters!! @kathygriffin @StormyDaniels
It's been three hundred years
Right down to the day
Now the witches are back
And there's h*** to pay! pic.twitter.com/StOL335Lxr— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) June 10, 2019
She also compared Trump to one of America’s least consequential Republican presidents predicting that his re-election prospects would be similar.
Trump looks more like William Howard Taft every day. He too, only served one term. #VoteBlue2020 pic.twitter.com/elas5KV6qH

But it’s Midler’s latest tweet that is the pièce de résistance, weaving in a timely pop culture reference to the return of the latest season of The Handmaid’s Tale with a photo of the oft-forgotten Trump daughter Tiffany wearing a red dress at Buckingham Palace.

Dear @realDonaldTrump, thanks for the text and the heads up that the new season of Handmaid’s Tale is here!!! Riveted once again. Remind me, is Gilead East or Northeast of Mobile, AL? My best to Tiffany, she looked fabulous in red to meet the Queen! xoBette #StopTheBans pic.twitter.com/f4q7tOyr80

While Midler seems to be having a wonderful time ridiculing the president incessantly, Trump has yet to rise to the bait once again. Especially after Biden’s comments today, he may decide to back off this particular feud.
With a spat as entertaining as this one, that would be kind of a shame.
