Donald Trump has once again descended on the United Kingdom, which means that the Royal Family is being subjected to his odious company. The president met with Queen Elizabeth II today, and it appears the monarch could not resist in engaging in some subtle yet effective trolling.
Upon meeting with Trump, the queen presented him with an abridged, first edition of “The Second World War” written by Winston Churchill. CNN reports that the book, which the late prime minister wrote after the war, was given to the American president in a crimson and gold-toothed cover, with headbands done up in the color of the American and British flags.
While it’s a beautiful gift to be sure, and Trump has voiced his admiration of Churchill in the past, one can’t help but think that the queen is poking fun at Trump, whose aversion to reading is so strong that he rarely even reads his own briefings. This dislike of literacy is often cited by critics and even those close to him, so one can safely presume that the queen is aware of it. Of all the things she could have given Trump-related to Churchill, a book is the thing he is least likely to enjoy.
It also should be noted that there is a deep irony in Trump’s fascination with Churchill because in many ways Donald represents the exact same authoritarian forces that Churchill fought to defeat. One imagines if he were alive today he would hate Trump and would have no problem saying as much.
In addition to the book that Trump will surely never read, the queen gave him a set of pens in a box and First Lady Melania Trump received a silver, engraved box. Perhaps the extra gifts will take away some of the sting but the queen has certainly made her point.
