In it, Becker shared a photo of a hallway in his home. A sleeping bag can be seen lying between two bedrooms with a shotgun propped up against a door behind it. The caption states that the representative is “looking forward” to having his daughter and his fiance visit the family home for the weekend. He explains that she will be sleeping in the room on the left of the photo and the fiance in the room on the right. Becker himself will be sleeping on the sleeping bag separating the two rooms.

He ended the description by drawing attention to the “12 guage [sic] shotgun” in the photo, the clear implication being that if his daughter’s fiance tries to enter her room he would shoot him.

While it’s obviously a joke, it points to a troubling strain of thought amongst conservatives wherein daughters and their bodies are treated as the property of their fathers. In an attempt to be funny, Becker revealed that he has no respect for his daughter’s personal agency and in particular her right to express her sexuality with whoever and however she wants. It’s incredibly controlling and regressive.

In response to a Facebook comment saying that he wouldn’t need the gun, Becker offered an explanation…

It’s hardly surprising that this is a member of the same party fighting to curtail women’s reproductive rights and who chose an avowed sexual predator as their leader. The entire GOP is full of misogynists of the worst kind.

Becker himself sponsored an Ohio bill preventing insurance from covering birth control and abortions, proving he is every bit as odious as the Facebook post implies. Men like this should have no say in what women do with their bodies and should be nowhere near the levers of governmental power.  The GOP must be voted out of power immediately, nothing short of women’s civil liberties are at stake.

Consider donating to the Ohio Democratic Party to fight against men like Becker.
