When America finally slogs its way out of this Trumpian nightmare and the sheer scope and depth of the damage inflicted by this presidency are assessed, anyone who enabled him will be remembered as cowards and opportunists of the vilest order.
Once such person who will inevitably be judged harshly by historians is Hope Hicks, Trump’s former White House Communications Director. While she may have thought she left the administration early enough to save herself from consequences, today she got some bad news today when the House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena for her to hand over documents and deliver testimony as part of their investigation into the corrupt Trump administration.
Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA), a presidential candidate, outspoken critic of the president, and member of the committee has now revealed to MSNBC’s Deadline the one big question he is dying to ask Hicks: Has she ever lied for the president?
Swalwell recounted how she refused to answer that very question during a hearing of the House Intelligence Committee.
“The question I asked her on the House Intelligence Committee, and she refused to answer, which is: did the president ever tell you to lie for him and did you ever lie for him? That was a very, I would say, flash point in the interview. She asked to step outside for ten minutes, and then she came back inside and refused to answer the question,” said Swalwell.
“I asked if Donald Trump Jr. Had asked her to lie and she refused again.,” Swalwell continued. “She started shaking her head and said, I refuse to answer. I refuse to answer. I asked her about Ivanka Trump, whether she asked her to lie, she said I refuse to answer. It clearly struck a nerve.”
Swalwell added that it appeared she was trying to protect her associates.
If she was indeed asked to lie for Trump or to shield members of his family — particularly Donald Trump Jr. in regards to his arguably treasonous Trump Tower meeting — it means she could have been asked to lie about numerous other things. If she was asked to lie under oath, the president or the First Son could be guilty of suborning perjury. If Hicks cracks during testimony, a whole slew of crimes could come pouring out.
Hopefully, Swalwell and the American people get the full truth from Hicks before too long. We’ve been forced to wait for far too long now.
