The Attorney General of the United States of America has revealed himself to be nothing more than a willing pawn of our deeply corrupt, inarguably criminal president. Trump appointed him to his position expecting unquestioning loyalty, and that’s exactly what he has received. William Barr refused to pursue charges against the president even after Special Counsel Robert Mueller outlined ten different occasions on which it appears Trump obstructed justice.
AG Barr then refused the subpoena demanding he hand over the unredacted Mueller report and the underlying evidence, prompting the House Judiciary Committee to vote to hold him in contempt of Congress last week. In other words, the highest ranking law enforcement official in the country cannot be trusted to obey the law or respect the balance of powers.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has already stated the Barr broke the law and has repeatedly condemned his actions. Today, Barr ran into her at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service in Washington D.C. and — feeling emboldened for some reason — attempted to flaunt his lawlessness by jokingly asking if Pelosi had brought handcuffs.
Pelosi took the comment in stride and smacked him down by immediately responding that the House sergeant at arms was present at the event if an arrest was necessary. Barr then walked off.
The Speaker was referencing the fact that if Congress does indeed decide to arrest the Attorney General, they would have to send the sergeant at arms to do so. Some Democrats have already begun to call for just such action, despite the fact that it hasn’t happened since the 1930s.
“We know how to arrest people around here. And if we need to arrest someone, the sergeant-at-arms will know how to do it. I’m not afraid of that,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD).
If Barr continues to ignore Congress and its constitutional authority, Democrats will be forced to take drastic action. Every day that passes without the Trump administration being held accountable moves us closer to a full erosion of our democracy.
Per another bystander, @SpeakerPelosi "not missing a beat, smiled and indicated to the Attorney General that the House Sergeant at Arms was present at the ceremony should an arrest be necessary."
Barr apparently laughed & walked away. https://t.co/DBk4gdqNfv
