President Trump is a man buried beneath a mountain of hypocrisies with perhaps one of the strangest being that he is constantly attacking the FBI and law enforcement officials yet claims to be a huge supporter of the police and a man of law and order. The truth, of course, is that his cop praising is nothing more than a ploy to pander to the widespread conservative love for law enforcement.
Today, he gave a speech for Peace Officers Memorial Day and invited the family of Ronil Singh, a California police officer who was killed by an undocumented immigrant this past December. Unfortunately for them, the president was unable to focus solely on Singh’s or other officers’ service and sacrifice and decided to give one of his rambling, hate-filled MAGA speeches.
He exploited the details of Singh’s murder to attack immigrants in general, choosing to hit his hackneyed talking points rather than treat the event with the solemnity it deserves. It’s nothing new for the man who built his entire 2016 campaign around racism and xenophobia but is no less egregious for that fact.
“Tremendous problems occur at the southern border from drugs to the wrong people to being allowed to come in because of a corrupt and broken system that can be changed in twenty minutes. Twenty minutes, if they want to change it. In the meantime we have to do it the tough way, there is no reason for that. That is why we are calling on Congress to fix our terrible immigration laws,” Trump said at one point.
The president went on to complain about “catch-and-release,” sanctuary cities, and the diversity visa lottery program. The latter he still doesn’t seem to comprehend. He constantly uses it as a dishonest rhetorical cudgel but if pressed to explain how it works you can sure he’d be clueless. He just knows its a useful phrase to incite his more ignorant supporters.

True to his xenophobic nature, he also made sure to blame immigrants for crime, despite the fact that immigrants are actually less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans. It’ a fact that he’s been informed of yet continues to ignore because he knows his lie plays well with his base.

Expect more of this kind of hateful language as he gears up for his 2020 reelection campaign. Now, more than ever, it must be condemned every time he trots it out.
