If there’s one thing that really defines the Trump presidency, it’s the obsessive focus on Donald Trump, the person, from both his critics and from the president himself. When he’s not watching television and tweeting about what people are saying about him, he’s out holding rallies and bathing in the adulation of his hooting and baying fans. Every appearance, be it a speech to the Central Intelligence Agency or the Boy Scout Jamboree, is another chance for him to brag about himself to the nation.
Which is why it’s not too surprising to hear that Trump is planning to turn Washington D.C.’s Fourth of July celebration into Trumpfest. Instead of celebrating our nation’s birthday and the values that bind us together as Americans, Trump will be driving an even deeper wedge into a fiercely divided American people with a speech that will inevitably morph into a campaign rally taking place on public land during a public holiday.
The Washington Post reports that “Trump and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt have already “taken charge” of the celebration. The fireworks launch will be moved from the Mall to West Potomac Park under the new scheme. And Trump has made “tentative” plans to deliver a speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Trump administration officials told the newspaper.”
Rep. Betty McCollum of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies House subcommittee was aghast at the president’s plans.
“It’s not about any one president. It’s about how our nation came to be, because of a hardy band of brave men and women. It’s not about any one person, it’s about ‘We, the people.’ And if the president moves to make this about him, I think he will find the American public disappointed and angered by it” she said in a statement.
If Trump’s recent speeches are any hint of what we’re going to see on the Fourth of July, it’s going to be a wild and unhinged stream-of-consciousness centered around himself and his imaginary achievements, his grudges, his prejudices, and his abhorrent policy agenda. It will be an absolute disgrace to this country and everything it stands for, like Trump’s entire presidency.
