The Republican Party’s war against women’s reproductive rights is one of the most sinister elements of its vile agenda, aimed at subjugating women and pandering to the radical elements of its Evangelical voting bloc who are convinced in their zealotry that abortion is tantamount to murder. If the men running the GOP had their druthers, a woman’s right to choose would be completely stripped away, forcing motherhood on countless individuals who lack the ability or the inclination to raise children.

Yesterday, Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed a draconian so-called “heartbeat bill,” which The AP has identified as “one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws.” It prohibits abortion once a fetal heartbeat has been found, which in some case happens six weeks into the pregnancy before some women have even had time to realize they’re pregnant.
Late last night, rising Democratic star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to call out the legislation for exactly what it is: a backdoor ban on abortion. It’s specifically engineered to circumvent Rowe V. Wade. AOC pointed out that for many women being six week’s pregnant just means her period is two weeks late, which is to say not enough time to realize she’s pregnant.
She correctly drew issue with the fact that the Republican men pushing this kind of legislation “don’t know the first thing about a woman’s body outside the things they want from it.” Sadly, this is the harsh reality and far too many men in the GOP treat women like objects to be controlled.
“6 weeks pregnant” = 2 weeks late on your period.
Most of the men writing these bills don’t know the first thing about a woman’s body outside of the things they want from it. It’s relatively common for a woman to have a late period + not be pregnant.
So this is a backdoor ban. https://t.co/xWd9GAj51b

For context, this kicks in within days of a typical at-home test working.
If you were sexually assaulted (stress delays cycle), took a morning-after pill (throws off cycle), or have an irregular cycle, you‘d have no idea.
There are a TON of ways this law ignores basic biology.

It wasn’t long before the usual male conservative ghouls crawled out of the digital woodwork to imply that they somehow understand periods and pregnancy better than Ocasio-Cortez, a laughable idea at face value. Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire was quickly taken to task and humiliated by other Twitter users for his arrogance and ignorance after he made an incredibly pathetic “joke.”
“Alexandria Ocasio Cortez” = her mother 1,544 weeks late on her period https://t.co/aVAJ6uAT2L

Good job cramming the joke into that math equation format. It sounds really natural and fun

You got her man. She will never recover from this.

Ben Shapiro, the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Wire, also decided to weigh in on AOC’s tweet, embarrassing himself by revealing how little he understands women. He said it was “disturbing” that AOC thinks a six-week-old embryo is “apparently just a missed period,” demonstrating that for all his fervent “pro-life” rhetoric, he doesn’t even know how most women discover they’re pregnant, effectively disqualifying himself from the conversation altogether. The responses were as brutal as expected.
It's not a "backdoor ban." It is a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, just like it says it is. The fact that this is early in pregnancy is the entire point of the bill. The fact that a six-week-old embryo is apparently just a missed period to you is disturbing. https://t.co/3KtMlwN7sf

Did you need to go out of your way to prove her point? No. But did you? Yes. And I, for one, appreciate it.

Trying to brand yourself as the "facts" guy is going to continually run up against the fact that you run your life based on unquestioning acceptance of ancient religious dogma.

Honey, women miscarry at 5, 6, 8 weeks and think it’s just a heavy period all the fucking time. It’s a ban and you know it.
— Lauren Hough (@laurenthehough) May 8, 2019
Uh Ben, missing a period is how most women figure out they're pregnant. There isn't a light that goes off to inform women that they've become impregnated, they often don't know or show signs for months.
